Toms River North Class of 2018 right-handed pitcher Brendan Mullins announced via Twitter Wednesday his non-binding verbal commitment to play college baseball of Penn State University.

Mullins is the second Shore Conference player from the Class of 2018 to commit to Penn State and the fourth such player to commit to a Division I program. Freehold Township infielder Ryan Ford committed to Penn State in June while Middletown North right-hander Tyler Ras (Alabama) and Brick Memorial right-hander Nick Stephan (George Washington).

This past spring, Mullins emerged as one of Ocean County's top pitchers in his first varsity season with the Mariners. He went 5-1 with a 2.50 ERA, 38 strikeouts and 20 walks in 47 2/3 innings as a sophomore.

Mullins earned three of his five wins during the Ocean County Tournament, which Toms River North won for the second time in four seasons. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, which he capped with seven scoreless innings against Toms River South in the championship game. The Mariners scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to make a winner of Mullins.
