CLASS A SOUTH

Central 21, Southern 14

The Golden Eagles (1-0, 1-0) rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit to take down the rival Rams (0-1, 0-1) for the third straight season and keep the Boyd-Emmert Trophy in Bayville.

Sophomore quarterback Joe Fowler threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Denis Corbin with 1:12 left for the go-ahead score, and junior defensive back Jonathan Gonzalez sealed the win with an interception with under 30 seconds left.

Fowler had a great debut in going 15-for-21 for 168 yards and a touchdown, including 9-for-11 for 106 yards in the second half. Corbin caught a game-high seven passes for 95 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a touchdown. Senior running back Mike Bickford ran for 117 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Junior Joe Miele led a balanced Southern rushing attack with 61 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He also blocked a punt that led to a touchdown and recorded a sack.

 

NONDIVISIONAL

No. 7 Ocean 42, Monmouth 7

The Spartans (1-0) raced out to a 35-0 halftime lead to put away the Falcons (0-1) and start the season with a win at Carelli Field.

Senior quarterback Kenny Pickett ran for two touchdowns and threw another to freshman wide receiver Sean Rossback. Senior running back Anthony Tedesco ran for a short touchdown and Anthony Mazza returned a fumble over 50 yards for a touchdown. Jasher Pena added a 10-yard touchdown run in the second half.

Monmouth avoided being shut out when Ryan Convery ran for a nine-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
