Class A North

Freehold Township 40, Howell 20 - Story and video highlights

On the heels of a 1-9 season, the Patriots (1-0, 1-0) roared out of the gate to rout the Rebels (0-1, 0-1) behind running back Matt Pine, who exploded for three rushing touchdowns of 38, 25 and 29 yards and also returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown, all in the first half, for a 34-7 lead at the break.

Shane Laricy added a 15-yard touchdown run, and Jack O'Brien scored on a quarterback sneak as the Patriots scored nearly half as many points as they scored all of last season (87) in unveiling their new spread offense.

Mark Iacobino threw a touchdown pass to running back Jarvis Leaks, who also ran for a 1-yard score in the loss for Howell. Mike Reilly added a one-yard touchdown run in the loss.

 

Freehold 26, Middletown North 14 - Story and video highlights

Colonials senior running back Josh Dixon erupted for 217 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries, and also had an interception on defense to lead the way in a key season-opening win for the Freehold (1-0, 1-0) over the Lions (0-1, 0-1).

Middletown North junior running back Chad Freshnock ran for a career-high 250 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries in defeat.

Class B South

Donovan Catholic 10, Pinelands 7 - Story and video highlights

Gian Carlo Stigliano kicked a 35-yard field goal with nine seconds left to give the Griffins (1-0, 1-0) a dramatic victory over the Wildcats (0-1, 0-1).

Conner Bussey ran for a 51-yard touchdown with 4:06 left in the first half to give Pinelands a 7-0 lead before Donovan Catholic tied it up with a 6-yard touchdown pass from David Calderon to Tyler McShea with 1:38 left in the second quarter.

Class B North

No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 55, Wall 6 - Story and video highlights

Red Bank Catholic junior quarterback Eddie Hahn accounted for 170 total yards and five touchdowns to lead the top-ranked Caseys (1-0, 1-0) to a blowout victory over the Crimson Knights for their 34th consecutive win versus Shore Conference opponents.

Hahn had three carries for 109 yards and three touchdowns and threw touchdowns of 37 and 10 yards to Trevor Cowley and Nick Lubischer, respectively.

Senior running back Mike Cordova ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns and senior running back Tommy Spernal ran for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Senior running back Steven Poss ran for a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter to account for Wall's points.

Saturday, Sept. 6

Middletown South 56, Marlboro 0 

The Eagles (1-0, 1-0) rolled to a win over the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1) in the opener as junior running back Cole Rogers had touchdown runs of 20, 7, and 3 yards, and sophomore running back James McCarthy added touchdown runs of 50 and 5 yards to help Middletown South build a 49-0 lead by halftime.

Joe Timmins added a 30-yard touchdown run, Tom Coffey had a 3-yard scoring run, and Samson Dube added a 12-yard touchdown in the win. The defense limited Marlboro to one first down in the first half, and that came via penalty, holding the Mustangs to minus-12 total yards before the break.
