TOURNAMENTS

Walter Woods Tournament, at Middletown South

Manalapan had three champions and two second-place finishers on its way to finishing second in the team standings. Sophomore Paul Santomarco at 106, sophomore Alex Baran at 132 and senior Ronny Ghaida at 152 pounds each won titles while senior Jake Staklinski at 170 and senior Justin Obermeyer at 182 place second.

Ghaida was selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Jackson Memorial senior Matt McGowan, the Region VI champion at 126 pounds, captured the 138-puond title while Jaguars junior Dave Lenay won the 220-pound bracket.

McGowan was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights and beat District 20 runner-up Donny Albach from Monroe, 7-1 in the final. Lenay pinned Monroei's Gregg Nekrasovas in 47 seconds in the final after a 10-1 major decision over the top seed, Freehold Township's Austin Colbert, in the semifinals.

Jackson Liberty junior Josh Bollard defeated Monroe's Nick DePalma, 6-4, to win the 113-pound championship. DePalma was a Region V qualifier at 106 last season.

 

 

60th Annual Red Devil Invitational, at Hunterdon Central

Southern senior Seon Bowker captured the 182-pound title and senior Dan Lynch won the heavyweight championship to lead the Rams. Junior Vin Miele finished second at 195 and senior Ryan Adams was third at 170 pounds.

Bowker won by fall in his first two bouts before defeating Hunterdon Central's Michael Iodice, 5-3, in the final. Iodice was second at 170 pounds in the Region V last season while Bowker was the District 24 champion.

Lynch beat Hackettstown's Joe Andes 2-1 in tiebreaker (double overtime) in the championship bout. Andes was a Region 1 qualifier last season. In the semifinals, Lynch scored a 5-1 decision over top-seeded Robert Livshits of Cherokee, who was the District 27 champion at 220 pounds last season.

 

Collingswood Tournament

Christian Brothers Academy senior Nick Schutzenhofer won the 113 pound title and junior Richie Koehler captured the 120 pounds championship.

Lacey had three champions with sophomore Hunter Gutierrez at 106, junior Luke Moynihan at 126 and senior Matt Garrity at 160 and finished third in the team standings behind champion Collingswood and Woodstown.

 

Patriot Invitational, at Secaucus 

Point Beach captured the team title with five champions and two runners-up as Will Jarvis at 106, Roddy Rupp at 138, Jimmy Sherlock at 152, Jack Baker at 182 and Nick Kenmure at 220 each won their brackets. Jude Lovgren at 126 and Cade Watkins at heavyweight each finished second.

Baker, who was fourth in Region VI last season, won by fall in both of his bouts and Jarvis had pins in two of his three bouts. Rupp defeated Bayonne's Efrain Davilla III, 6-2, in a matchup of region qualifiers.

For Red Bank, Alex Peregrino (120), Luke Devine (132) and Sam Goldzweig (152) each finished second in their respective weight classes, while Finn Smith was third at 126.
