SWIM Inc., which stands for Specialized Water Interest Movement, is a non-profit organization that began back in 1975 to assist adults suffering from muscular impairments to obtain water based therapy. Originally located in an indoor swimming pool attached to the home of founder Doris Hollingsworth in Bedminster, SWIM Inc. now operates ten programs in nine community and YMCA pools in New Jersey, stretching from Sussex to Cape May.  Ocean County is their newest location.  The organization has a headquarters in Bridgewater.

Each program, or chapter, run by a dedicated group of volunteers, encourages adults with Multiple Sclerosis, Post Polio Syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and other mobility impairments to enjoy FREE aquatic exercise in a safe and caring environment. With the support and generosity of a local philanthropist, the Board is now launching an expansive program to make SWIM more available for those who will benefit by employing its first Executive Director. After thirty-six years of a being a total volunteer organization, Eileen Loughnane will continue the journey started by Doris Hollingsworth and enthusiastically promoted by swimmers, volunteers and friends.

The Ocean County group met for the first time last week.  The session was attended by 11 participants and 7 volunteers.  The group was led in water exercise by Deirdre Amato, Aquatic Safety Director of the OCY from 1-2 PM followed by a social hour attended by participants and volunteers from 2-3 PM.

Any adult who fits the target group for this program and would like to participate should contact Eileen McKenna at 732-270-8413 or via e mail at eprendergast@comcast.net for an application.  Anyone interested in volunteering should also contact Eileen.
