Shore Sports Network Wrestler of the Week: Long Branch’s Ray Guzman
Every week this regular season, Shore Conference wrestling fans will have their chance to vote for the Shore Sports Network Wrestler of the Week on our website, with tens of thousands of votes cast this season.
The WOW recipient for Jan. 18 through Jan. 24 is Long Branch freshman 106-pounder Ray Guzman, who went 3-1 on the week, highlighted by a 4-2 win over Ocean's Adam Manzo in sudden victory overtime that was a crucial part of the Green Wave's 34-30 victory over the rival Spartans.
Guzman also defeated Buena's Dan Wooton 8-2 and Egg Harbor's Jerry Vo 6-4. Guzman is 14-6 on the season and on the cusp of the Region VI top 10 as ranked by theshoreconference.com.
It was a two-way race for the Wrestler of the Week award, and Guzman edged Howell freshman Christian Murphy with 50.78 percent of the vote to 43.88 percent. Murphy won the 152-pound title at the Chase Life Invitational in Naples, Fla. to lead the Rebels to a second-place finish.
