Shore Conference Teams on the Move in Proposed NJSIAA Wrestling Realignment
Several Shore Conference teams will be on the move according to the tentative district and region wrestling realignment released by the NJSIAA on Wednesday.
Shore Conference schools will continue to find their homes in Regions 5, 6, 7 and 8 but there are some notable changes coming involving the top teams in the Shore Conference. The most notable changes are Howell and Brick Memorial moving to Region 7 from Region 6 and Middletown North and Raritan coming back to Region 6 from Region 5. Moving to Region 5 from Region 6 are Manalapan, Monmouth and Shore. Brick is also going back to Region 6 from Region 7.
Two years ago, the NJSIAA radically realigned the state’s 32 districts and eight regions to balance out the power teams as well as the number of teams in each district and region. Part of that agreement was also to reassess the districts every two years as opposed to the previous span of every five years.
Another change is the NJSIAA now using a team’s power point average over the last three years instead of the previous method of using the five-year power point average. A school’s three-year average was used to separate the state’s top 32 ‘power’ programs across the eight regions and then again within those separate regions and districts. The goal was to have four power teams in each region and one in each district.
Schools were assigned into their region based on geography with the 281 public schools being placed from north to south and the 30 non-public schools with wrestling teams being placed from south to north.
The sites for the 32 district tournaments and eight region tournaments have not been determined yet.
The proposed realignment will be voted on again at the NJSIAA’s June 6 meeting, and if approved it will go into effect for the 2018-2019 season and last for two years.
