No. 1 CBA 3, No. 8 Long Branch 1

Senior Jake Homowitz scored the equalizer in the 26th minute and classmate Dylan Cupo added the winner in the 62nd with CBA playing with a man advantage as the Colts rallied for a win over the Green Wave on opening day.

Senior center back and Asbury Park transfer Davenson JoinVilmar broke open the scoring with a header on a free kick by senior Cesar Rojas Lopez, putting Long Branch ahead, 1-0, in the 21st minute. Seven minutes earlier, senior Brian Yocute slammed a shot off the crossbar to nearly break the ice.

CBA responded with a surge, beginning with Homowitz's goal. Long Branch cleared the ball out of the 18-yard box on a free kick, but Homowitz settled it just outside the 18 and hit a shot with the outside of his foot that bent toward the right side of the back netting.

In the 52nd, Long Branch's chances took a hit when senior defender Chris Lazo-Quintanilla was issued his second yellow card for an illegal tackle, disqualifying him for the game and giving CBA an 11-10 advantage. Ten minutes later, junior Will Thygeson turned the corner on the left side, played a low cross to the near left post, when Cupo knocked it out of the air and into the net.

Senior goalkeeper Carlos dos Santos kept Long Branch within striking distance by denying two shots by sophomore Dylan Millevoi and one by Thygeson, but Millevoi finally broke through with a 20-yard rip in the 79th minute.

 

Class B North

Manasquan 1, St. John Vianney 0

Senior Matt Karolak scored in the 14th minute by one-timing a pass from senior Gavin Guagenty and the Warriors hung on to beat the Lancers in the season-opener for both sides.

Non-Division

Monmouth 4, Middletown South 2

Seniors Ethan Wallace and Prabnoor Singh each scored two goals and the Falcons rolled to a win over the Eagles to open up the 2021 season at the Shore.

Wallace scored both of his goals in the first half to stake Monmouth to a 2-0 halftime lead. His first was a one-time finish off a cross from classmate Aiden Hicks and his second came after he swiped the ball from a defender in the Middletown South third of the field.

Wallace then slid a through-ball in to Singh, who finished to the right upper 90 for a 3-0 Falcons lead in the first minute of the second half. Singh's second goal came off another assist from Hicks - a through-ball that led to an upper-left finish from Singh and a 4-1 Monmouth lead.

Senior Niko Kousouris scored Middletown South's first goal to cut Monmouth's lead to 3-1 in the 50th minute and Kareem Abd-Elhameed capped the scoring in the final minute for the Eagles.

Central 5, Point Beach 0

Senior Gianni Smith assisted a goal by sophomore David Kroon in the first minute and later scored two of his own to lead the Golden Eagles to a comfortable opening-day win over the Garnet Gulls.

Senior Mike Azzerone extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 12th minute off a feed from junior Ryan DiCillo and Smith scored the first of his two goals in the 23rd minute on a free kick. Smith and classmate Will Smith each scored second-half goals, with Smith's coming on a penalty kick.

Barnegat 6, Mater Dei Prep 1

Senior Darren Cernansky and junior Jesse Hedlund each scored two goals in Barnegat's five-goal first half the the Bengals rolled to a win over the Seraphs.

Both of Cernansky's goals came on penalty kicks and Hudson Morici scored the other Barnegat goal before halftime. Sean O'Neill scored the last Bengals goal, while Zach O'Neal got Mater Dei Prep on the board in the final two minutes.

 

Non-Conference

Red Bank Catholic 6, St. Thomas Aquinas 0

Senior Nico Gonzalez recorded a hat trick and the Caseys picked up their first win in 22 games to give head coach Cody Calafiore his first career win.

Gonzalez also assisted a goal in the 49th minute by junior Connor McGee, who assisted a goal by junior Dean Bolstard in the 53rd that made it 3-0. Junior Vincent Coccimiglio added a goal and two assists for RBC as well.
