When Manasquan, Red Bank Catholic and Middletown South opted out of participating in December’s WOBM Christmas Classic the consensus was that the girls field had lost most of its power-packed lineup. However, four of those teams have reached NJSIAA Sectional Finals and less than three months later it appears the annual holiday tournament featured more than its share of outstanding teams and players.

Toms River North (as a 7 seed) won the championship back on December 30th by beating Point Boro in the finals and the Lady Mariners have used that early-season success as a springboard to a tremendous season. Tonight they will host Cherokee in the South Jersey Group 4 finals with that game to be played in the old gym at 5pm as there is a special event in the Pine Belt Arena. On their way to the WOBM finals the Mariners beat both 2nd seeded Sayreville and #3 Ewing who are a combined 51-5 this season. Top-seeded Sayreville hosts South Brunswick tonight for the CJ Group 4 title while #1 seed Ewing will be home against #2 Neptune in the CJ Group 3 championship game Tuesday night.

Oh, by the way, Neptune was the #1 seed in the most recent WOBM Christmas Classic but was upset by Red Bank in the quarterfinals.  Not bad for a tournament that lost its three top teams from 2015.
