ATLANTIC CITY -- The mental aspect of wrestling can make or break some wrestlers. The battle between their own ears often takes precedent to what happens on the mat. To win inside the circle, they first need to win inside their own head.

For Howell sophomores Giovanni Scafidi and Sebastian Ortega, having the proper mindset has made all the difference. They are feeling good both mentally and physically, and now they're in the state quarterfinals.

Scafidi and Ortega each won two bouts on Thursday evening at Boardwalk Hall and are two of 26 Shore Conference wrestlers who advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round of the 2022 NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships. Scafidi, seeded 12th at 138 pounds, won 5-0 over DePaul's Nick Bottazzi in the preliminary round before defeating Raritan's Zach Reilley, the No. 5 seed, 6-0, in the pre-quarterfinals.

"It feels pretty great. I wrestled through all three positions, kept my head clear and my emotions under control," Scafidi said. "My own head is the No. 1 aspect I've been working on since I was a kid. It plays 98 percent of the role in my wrestling. It's the thing I have to fix for times like this to be able to get out there and get what I want."

For Scafidi, the win over Reilley avenged a 3-1 loss during the regular season and showcased what makes him so dangerous. After a scoreless first period, he chose bottom, escaped, and then took Reilley down to go up 3-0. The takedown came with 1:05 left in the period and he was able to ride out Reilly the rest of the way. In the third, Reilley chose down and Scafidi kept him there, eventually turning him for three near-fall points and a 6-0 lead.

"Top is probably my best position," Scafidi said. "I've been working on legs since the first day I went to a clinic on leg riding. I found something I'm good at and I use it to my advantage."

Reaching the semifinals guarantees a wrestler a state medal no worse than sixth place. To get there, Scafidi will have to beat West Essex's Mike Pescatore, who is on a tear of his own after coming from the 20 seed to reach the quarterfinals. He won by 12-0 major decision over Middletown South's Robert Generelli, the No. 4 seed, who beat Scafidi during the regular season.

"I wasn't totally worried about any of my losses," Scafidi said. "I knew it was definitely going to effect my seeding but the seeding doesn't matter here. Everyone comes to wrestle and someone comes to win it. The goal was to get down here and get on the podium. I'm going to continue moving forward."

While Scafidi craves a coveted spot on the podium, Ortega knows exactly what it takes to get there. Now his task is to get back.

Last year's state fifth-place finisher at 113 pounds, Ortega came from the No. 10 seed to reach the quarterfinals at 120 pounds. After a 10-1 major decision over Hackettstown's Nicholas Balella in the first round, the loaded bracket produced a pre-quarterfinal matchup against a fellow returning state medalist, Mount Olive junior Jack Bastarrika.

Scoreless after the first period, Bastarrika, who was sixth in the state at 106 pounds last season, took a 2-0 lead on a reversal with 31 seconds left in the second period. Before the period could come to an end, Ortega reversed Bastarrika to his back with a cradle and stuck him at the 3:56 mark to advance to the quarterfinals.

"He's a tough opponent and I just needed to stick to my offense," Ortega said. "I got reversed late and I just had to keep wrestling through it. It was a cradle but I don't even know how I got it."

It was an up and down regular season for Ortega coming off last season's state medal. He was injured early in the season and missed about three weeks of the season. He absorbed a few losses - none that would be considered egregious by any stretch - but they started to get to him.

"I just have to believe in myself," Ortega said. "In the beginning of the season I was injured and then I got down a few losses and starting getting in my own head. When I started believing in myself again and concentrating on my mindset, doing the moves I practice all the time in the room, it all came together."

To clinch a second state medal in as many years, Ortega will need to vanquish a familiar foe who has had his number this year. Christian Brothers Academy sophomore Alex Nini has taken his game to another level this season and is a state title contender as the No. 2 seed. Ortega defeated Nini twice last season. This year, it's Nini who is 2-0, including a 4-2 win in the Region 6 semifinals. Nini then went on to defeat returning state champion Evan Tallmadge of Brick Memorial in the championship bout.

"I need to get to my ties and on bottom break his ride off me," Ortega said. "Last time he got two stalling points but I didn't get out. I didn't have any offensive points. I need to get to my own offense. I have to believe in my training and tomorrow I will do that."

There were several all-Shore Conference matchups in the pre-quarterfinals, including a meeting between the top two ranked 144-pounders in the Shore. Moving on to the quarterfinals is Wall sophomore Donovan DiStefano, who remained undefeated with a 5-3 decision over Middletown South's David Hussey. Both entered as region champions and Hussey owned a one-spot edge in both the seeds (8) and rankings (1) based on being a two-time state qualifier. It was the matchup we would have seen during the individual Shore Conference Tournament, but that wasn't held this year.

The first period went by with no scoring and Hussey took a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second period. DiStefano scored a takedown 33 seconds into the period but Hussey escaped two seconds later to tie the bout 2-2. DiStefano went down in the third and got out to take a 3-2 lead. He then took Hussey down a second time with 25 seconds on the clock and held on to win 5-3.

"My game plan was basically to control the ties and get to my stuff. I wanted to finish off the match with two takedowns and that's exactly what I did," DiStefano said.

DiStefano is one of several wrestlers who were state qualifiers last season but are competing in Boardwalk Hall for the first time. Last season's state tournament was held at Phillipsburg High School due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"It's so much different," DiStefano said. "This is A.C. and it's huge, it's this big tournament. Last year was just another gym you're wrestling in. This environment is so cool, so crazy."

The road gets exponentially tougher for DiStefano on Friday morning when he will square off against the No. 1 seed and returning state champion Ty Whalen of Clearview.

"It's gonna be fun," DiStefano said. "Obviously I'm not expected to win so I'm going to let it fly and have some fun."

No. 1 CBA has a Shore Conference-leading six quarterfinalists. The Colts have Nini at 120, senior Garrett Totten at 126, junior Julian George at 138, junior Tyler Barrett at 150, junior Zander Silva at 157, and junior Robert Canterino at 215.

Nini had to grind out a 1-0 win over Pennsville's Cameron Morgan and will face Ortega in the quarterfinals. Totten rolled to a 9-1 major decision over Westfield's Ethan Composto and will wrestle against St. John Vianney's Joe Giordano in the quarterfinals. The two wrestled during the Shore Conference Team Tournament with Totten winning 4-3.

George is the No. 1 seed at 138 and pinned Holy Cross's Richie DeFulvio in the 2:37 to reach the quarterfinals. He will wrestle St. Peter's Prep's Felix Lettini. Barrett defeated Washington Township's Ethan Wilson, 8-2, to set up a match with St. Joseph (Montvale)'s Frank DiBella, whom he defeated in ultimate tiebreaker during the season. Silva cruised with a technical fall and a major decision and will meet Westfield's Sean Murphy in the quarterfinals.

Like at 144, Canterino's bout with Central Regional's Cosmo Zaccaro was a matchup of the top two 215-pounders in the Shore. Canterino came out on top with a 12-6 decision in a match that was tied 5-5 in the third period. Canterino will face Washington Township's Dominic Petracci in the quarterfinals where he hopes to avenge a 1-0 loss from the regular season.

St. John Vianney is right behind CBA with five quarterfinalists: freshman Patrick O'Keefe at 106, freshman Anthony Knox at 113, junior Joe Giordano at 126, senior Nico Diaz at 132, and junior Jasiah Queen at 157. O'Keefe, seeded third, won by fall in both of his bouts and will face Mount Olive's Tyler Hagensen in the quarterfinals. Knox, the No. 4 seed, won by technical fall in both of his bouts and will wrestle St. Augustine's Kaden Naame in the quarterfinals.

Giordano knocked off the No. 6 seed, Morristown's Jack Myers, 5-2, to reach the quarterfinals and get another crack at Totten. Diaz won by major decision over Red Bank's Phil Stolfa for the second time in less than a week to reach the quarterfinals vs. Montville's Aaron Kurzer. Queen scored an impressive 9-2 decision over Old Bridge standout Tyler Sagi to advance to face No. 1 seed Simon Ruiz of Delbarton.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Donovan Catholic sophomore Kurt Wehner at 106, Southern Regional junior Conor Collins and Brick Memorial senior Evan Tallmadge at 120, Middletown South junior Jack Zaleski at 126, Brick Memorial junior Anthony Santaniello at 132, Southern Regional sophomore Matt Henrich at 138, Ocean senior Shane Cartagena-Walsh at 157, Howell senior Hunter Mays at 165, Rumson-Fair Haven senior Shay Addison, Red Bank Catholic junior Sabino Portellla, and Brick Memorial freshman Harvey Ludington at 175, and Red Bank Catholic sophomore Lorenzo Portella at heavyweight.
