The Shore Conference football postseason begins on Friday evening with some terrific matchups, and one of the leading games will feature No.10 Manasquan crossing the river south to clash with undefeated No. 9 Point Boro for the Week 8 The Block GameDay Countdown Game of the Week.

Point Boro is one of just four undefeated teams in the Shore heading into Week 8 and is coming off another impressive offensive performance in a 49-6 victory over Monmouth Regional in a meeting of division champions. The Panthers have the No. 1 scoring offense in the conference at 42.5 points per game thanks to its four outstanding skill players in their flexbone triple-option offense. Sophomore 'A' back Jake Croce leads the way with 558 yards rushing and six touchdowns, senior quarterback Charlie Vitale has 496 yards rushing and nine touchdowns plus 243 yards passing and four touchdowns, junior slotback Connor Cilento has 461 yards rushing and six touchdowns and sophomore slotback/quarterback Matt Oliphant has 278 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. Point Boro has rushed for 2,018 yards this season, averaging 8.7 yards per carry and 336 yards per game.

Defensively, Point Boro enters allowing 10 points a game. Junior linebackers JJ Bennett and Connor Reynolds have led the way. Bennett leads the team in tackles and Reynolds leads the team with three sacks. Vitale, Cilento and Croce each have two interceptions in the secondary.

Point Boro's defense will be tested by a Manasquan aerial attack that presents a much different look from the traditional multiple-I offense the Warriors have used since legendary head coach Vic Kubu came to Broad Street. Junior quarterback Brett Patten is a dynamic player and has been one of the best quarterbacks in the Shore this season, throwing for 959 yards and 14 touchdowns with a 72 percent completion rate and rushing for 212 yards and four touchdowns. He has a plethora of weapons around him with senior Cole Kozlowski and his team-leading 27 catches for 350 yards and three touchdowns and senior Robert Pendergist (17 rec. for 325 yards and four TDs) leading the way at wide receiver. Senior running back Patrick Woodford has rushed for 269 yards and two touchdowns and added two receiving touchdowns, and junior running back Jhamier Howard has 246 yards rushing and four touchdowns plus 138 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Manasquan is averaging a hair under 30 points per game.

Manasquan's defense is allowing 17.3 points per game, but that number drops to 12.6 if you exclude a 41-7 loss to No. 1 Red Bank Catholic. Senior linebacker Ryan Burns (39 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL) has had a strong season along with junior linebacker Cael Driscoll (23 tackles, 4 TFL), senior defensive end Jack Burns. (23 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 TFL, 2 FF), and senior defensive tackle JJ Cavanagh (2 sacks, 1 INT).

Each Friday during the season the Shore Sports Network will highlight one game at which Ed Sarluca will do live segments before, during, and after the game on our Shore Sports Network Facebook page.  In addition, we will award an MVP to the game’s top player who will be interviewed on the field as part of our Facebook coverage.

This weekly segment is presented by The Butcher’s Block in Long Branch which will re-open soon following an extensive renovation that includes a full bar. Owned and operated by former Monmouth Regional quarterback Tommy D’Ambrisi, The Block has quickly become a Jersey Shore favorite, especially for streak lovers.

As part of the GameDay Countdown, those attending the game are invited to look for the Shore Sports Network SUV and sign up to win dinner for six with limo transportation to The Block at the end of the season. This promotion will end in November (TBD) with our final Friday night appearance. The contest is open to those 18 years and older.

Any attempt by any person to undermine the legitimate operation of the Giveaway may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. The Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
