Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey Football Player of the Week: Point Boro’s Tanner Gordon
Every week this regular season, Shore Conference football fans will have their chance to vote for the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey/Shore Sports Network Football Player of the Week on our website, with over 100,000 votes cast so far this season.
The winner of the Week 6 readers’ vote for the Shore Conference Football Player of the Week is Point Boro senior running back Tanner Gordon, who rumbled for 193 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown late in regulation, to key a thrilling 35-28 comeback victory over Lakewood.
Gordon had a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to pull the Panthers to within 20-14 after Lakewood had run out to a 20-0 lead. His 25-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds left in regulation completed the stunning comeback as Point Boro scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to remain undefeated at 6-0.
Gordon’s 193 yards in Week 6 are a season high, and he now has 420 yards rushing and four touchdowns in four games this season [he missed Weeks 2 and 3 with an injury].
Point Boro is ranked No. 8 in the Shore Sports Network Top 10 and is looking to close out its second straight outright and third straight overall Class B South division title. The Panthers take on Jackson Liberty (1-5) this Friday night.
It was a two-man race for the Week 6 Player of the Week with Gordon edging Lacey’s Jason Giresi, a fellow B South running back, with 48.41 percent of the vote. Giresi ran for a career-high 243 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-24 win over Barnegat.
