Every week this fall, Jersey Mike’s and Shore Sports Network will be selecting a Team of the Week based on its performance over the past weekend.

The Jersey Mike’s Team of the Week for Week 5 is Monmouth Regional, which went on the road and knocked off previously-undefeated Keyport, 28-7, to clinch their first division title in nearly two decades. Shore Sports Network stopped by practice on Tuesday to present the Falcons and head coach Dan Wendel with a special game ball and a $250 Jersey Mike's gift card.

Monmouth has been one of the surprise teams of the 2021 season and that continued on Saturday when they pulled out the victory in a huge National Division showdown. Junior running back Julian Jones was tremendous with a career-high 244 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 30 carries while the defense forced three turnovers and shut down a Keyport offense that was averaging more than 30 points per game.

Junior linebacker Jeremiah Robles had a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown and senior defensive end Nelson Harris-Thomas was a force with two sacks and two forced fumbles. Aside from a long touchdown pass by Keyport on the final play of the third quarter, Monmouth's defense was ferocious. The Falcons yielded just 117 yards of offense and five first downs.

The victory pushed Monmouth's record to 4-1 and clinched at least a share of the National Division title. The Falcons can win the outright division championship with a win over Point Beach on Saturday. Prior to this season, Monmouth had won just two division titles in program history, the 1999 Class C South title and the 2006 Liberty Division title.

Now in his third year as Monmouth's head coach, Wendel has turned around a program that was winless in 2019 and went 2-6 last season. In addition to the division title, the Falcons are also in position to qualify for the NJSIAA playoffs for just the fourth time in program history.
