First Round

South Group IV

1-Southern 22, 16-Marlboro 4

Senior attackman Dylan Jinks and senior midfielder Chris Smith each scored four goals with two assists as the Rams (18-0) cruised past the Mustangs (2-14) and into the sectional quarterfinals.

Sophomore midfielder Will Johnson added three goals and two assists and junior attackman Nick Simonelli had a goal and a game-high four assists. Sophomore attackman Dylan Smith also had a hat trick while senior midfielder Shawn McManus had two goals with two assists. Junior midfielders Jon Manzo and Kyle Brown each scored twice with one assist and freshman attackman Ryan McWhorter also scored. Brendan Lefanto, Alex Gile and Tristan Farina each made two saves in goal.

Southern will host eighth-seeded Eastern at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

 

7-Freehold Township 7, 10-Egg Harbor Township 6 (2OT)

Matt Lach scored the game-winning goals off an assist from Brandon Nunez in double overtime to complete a thrilling first-round victory for the Patriots (15-5).

Billy Sasso and Kevin Patten each finished with a goal and two assists while Nunez and Mike Ferdinandi each hd a goal and an assist. Drew Dunn and Josh Nastarowicz also scored for the Patriots, and Matt Schroepfer made seven saves.

Freehold Township will play at second-seeded Lenape in the qurterfinals on Tuesday.

Senior attackman Zach Karasic scored a game-high five goals with one assist and  senior attackman Christian Goslin added four goals and one assist to send the Spartans (14-2) past the Bucs (10-12) and into the quarterfinals for the second straight season.

Junior midfielder Erik Rant added a hat trick, junior attackman Joey Appio scored two goals with two assists and junior Connor Daly and sophomore Sam Hanna also scored as the Spartans continued their best season in program history. Sophomore David Walk made 10 saves senior LSM Steven Graziano picked up a team-high 10 ground balls.

Brian Fagan, Brian Lynch and Brayden Seely each scored three times to lead Red Bank. Ryan Gilmartin had two goals and one assist and Cole Smolokoff added a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Jon Pierce made 12 saves and Dan Vilardi won 12-of-23 face-offs while picking up a game-high 13 ground balls.

After losing to Ocean in the first round last year as the higher seed, Red Bank was eager to get another shot at the Spartans in the state tournament. The Spartans took the regular season meeting 16-6.

Fagan got the Bucs on the board first with a goal and 9:57, and after Rant tied the score 13 seconds later, Fagan put the Bucs up 2-1 with a goal at 9:02. Ocean forged a 3-2 lead when Daly scored off a feed from Appio at 6:19 and Hanna grabbed a rebound and scored while Ocean was playing with an extra man.

Vilardi set up Smolokoff for the tying goal at 4:21 before Goslin and Karasic scored in the final 35 seconds to put Ocean up 5-3. Lynch's goal with 0.5 seconds left made it 5-4 heading to the second quarter.

Red Bank grabbed a 7-5 lead with three goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter. Gilmartin scored an unassisted goal 26 seconds in and Fagan tied the score with his third goal 36 seconds later. Smolokoff then set up Seely for an EMO goal at the nine-minus mark, giving the Bucs a two-goal edge.

Rant scored unassisted to pull Ocean within one, and a ground ball pickup in the defensive end by senior Tahj Clayton ended with him dishing to Goslin for a goal that made it 7-7, and that tally was the start of an eight-goal run by the Spartans between the second and third quarters that eventually put the Bucs away. Karasic gave the Bucs the lead at the half and for good with an unassisted goal with 1:09 left in the first half.

After a scoreless first six minutes of the third quarter, Ocean erupted for six goals in the final 5:56 to take a 14-7 lead. Goslin started the run before Karasic sank his third goal at 4:18. Rant tallied at 3:15 and then Karasic scored twice and Goslin once in the final 90 seconds.

Appio's tap-in goal off a pass from Clayton at 10:21 of the fourth quarter made it 15-7 and enabled the Spartans to absorb a late rally by Red Bank. Gilmartin set up Seely off a fluid passing play for an EMO goal, Vilardi set up Lynch for a goal, and Seely scored unassisted to pull Red Bank to within 15-10. Karasic set up Appio at 3:52 to make it 16-10, however, before Lynch scored at 3:05 and Gilmartin sank his second goal with 16 seconds to play.

Ocean will play the winner of 14th-seeded Holmdel and third-seeded Allentown in Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

 

South Group I

5-Manasquan 9, 12-Middle Township 3

Sophomore attackman Jarrett Birch scored three goals with one assist and senior midfielder Chris Klodowski had two goals and two assists to lead the Warriors (15-3) past the Panthers (9-9).

Manasquan will play at fourth-seeded Bernards on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
