TOMS RIVER - Senior running back Joey Fields found the end zone twice and also had an interception on defense to help defending Class B South champion Monsignor Donovan pick up its first win of the season with a 27-6 victory over Lakewood in a divisional game.

Monsignor Donovan (1-1, 1-0) struck first following the opening kickoff, when Fields caught a pass behind the line of scrimmage and darted his way through the Piners defense for a 61-yard touchdown run and a 6-0 lead after the PAT was no good.

With 5:07 left in the first it was Lakewood's talented sophomore, Amir Tyler, putting six points on the scoreboard on a 11-yard jaunt behind 6-foot-5, 310-pound senior lineman Ben Watson to tie the game at six. Tyler, usually a linebacker, had to take over for standout tailback Chapelle Cook, who left the game with an injury and did not return.

For the remainder of the half both teams relied on stingy defenses, Lakewood was led by defensive end Datrell Reed (3 sacks) and Monsignor Donovan was led by senior free safety Vincent Grasso (2 interceptions) to keep the score tied at six at the half.

Following halftime and a halted Lakewood drive, it was a 5-foot-8, 150-pound sophomore who entered the game with 5:37 left on clock in the 3rd quarter to give Monsignor Donovan a spark. After a spectacular 35-yard catch by senior wideout Kyle Carrington, sophomore  David Calderon Jr. took a pitch and sped his way through the Piners' defense for a 22-yard score. An extra point by senior Tre'von Bass gave the Griffins a 13-6 advantage.

Grasso's second interception of the game with 2:42 left in the third quarter helped set up the second touchdown of the night for Fields. Fields took a pitch from Grasso and zig-zagged his way into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown run and a 19-6 lead with 4:51 left in the game.

Sophomore defensive end Kyle Schremmer then put the exclamation point on the win with a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown for the final margin of victory.
