Nick Coniglio pitched a five-inning, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and a walk, while the Ranney offense smacked five doubles on the way to a Panthers win over the Wildcats in their state-tournament opener.
Diego Tavarez doubled and drove in four, Glen Cantalupo posted a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included one of the doubles, and Jack Tallent was also a perfect 2-for-2 with two of the doubles. A.J. Gracia also reached base in all four of his trips to the plate and stole three bases while scoring three runs.
Ranney now awaits the winning of the other sectional quarterfinal on its side of the bracket, played between No. 3 Bishop Eustace and No. 6 Doane Academy on Friday.
