Class A North

Middletown North 3, No. 3 Middletown South 2

Senior Ryan Frontera sparked the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning and classmate Eddie Patrick pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief to win in his first varsity outing as the Lions held on to beat the rival Eagles.

After Frontera belted his first homer of the season to open the scoring, Middletown South came right back with two runs in the top of the second on four walks and a hit-by-pitch. Patrick then came on, escaped trouble and pitched four more clean innings to get Middletown North to the seventh inning with the lead.

Middletown South brothers Mason Christopher and Will Christopher also kept the Lions in check over the final four frames after the left-hander Mason Christopher got burned on a fielder's choice error that scored two runs while still netting Frontera his second RBI.

Sophomore Zach Hampton -- Middletown North's opening-day starter -- pitched a scoreless seventh for the win, with junior left-fielder Jason Quardt delivering the key defensive play when he threw out junior counterpart Louis D'Alessio attempting to stretch a single into a double. Hampton followed with a walk, but then shut down the game to give Middletown North the victory in the first of two regular-season meetings between the crosstown rivals.

The two Middletown squads will meet again Tuesday, 6 p.m. at Middletown South.

No. 1 Ranney 12, Manasquan 0 (5 Innings)

Seniors Glen Cantalupo and Enrique Beltra slugged key extra-base hits during a six-run first and senior left-hander A.J. Gracia coasted through four scoreless innings to help Ranney continue its dominant start to the season with a five-inning win over the Warriors.

After a bases-loaded walk to senior Diego Tavarez opened the scoring, Cantalupo crushed a two-run, ground-rule double to left field and Beltra capped the six-run rally with an RBI triple.

With Gracia's four scoreless innings (two hits, no walks, eight strikeouts), Ranney opened the season with its top three pitchers -- Marcello Mastroianni, Nick Coniglio and Gracia -- throwing 14 scoreless innings with two hits and one walk allowed while the Panthers have outscored opponents 41-0 in the three wins.
