Shore Conference Tournament

Quarterfinals

(2) Red Bank Catholic 4, (7) Middletown North 2

Dylan Passo had a hand in all four Red Bank Catholic runs and Steve Svenson bounced back from a two-run Middletown North first inning to fire a five-hitter as the Caseys topped the red-hot Lions to reach the SCT semifinals Thursday at Count Basie Park.

Red Bank Catholic fell behind, 2-0, after Mike Hallard and Ryan Frontera led off the game with hits and scored for Middletown North. Hallard singled to right and moved up to third base on a long double to the right-center gap by Frontera.

Hallard scored on a wild pitch and Frontera came home on an RBI groundout by R.J. Kernan, but that was all the scoring the Lions would muster against Svenson.

RBC came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first, with both Frank Scrivanic and Shane Andrus working two-out walks to pass the baton to Passo. With a 3-1 count, Passo popped up a pitch from Lions right-hander Zach Hampton into shallow centerfield. The shortstop Frontera and centerfielder Dylan Briggs converged and the ball popped out of Frontera's glove, allowing both Scrivanic and courtesy runner A.J. Sciametta to score easily with the tying runs.

In the bottom of the third, Passo plated two runs in a more conventional manner, singling through the middle on a 2-2 pitch from Hampton with two out to give the Caseys a 4-2 lead. Andrus set up the scoring opportunity with a ground-rule double to right-center, which moved Scrivanic up to third after the RBC first baseman again worked a two-out walk.

Middletown North's only threat after the first inning against Svenson came in the fifth, when Gabe Ahlemeyer doubled down the left-field line with one out. Ahlemeyer moved to third on a ground ball to the left side of the infield and it could have been more for the Lions, but shortstop Max Dantoni made a diving stop and quick throw across the diamond to record the second out of the inning.

Svenson then struck out the next batter to end the threat, keeping the score 4-2 with six more outs to go.

Red Bank Catholic will face CBA at Count Basie Park Thursday in the second semifinal game between the two rivals this season. RBC defeated CBA, 3-0, in the Monmouth County Tournament semifinals.

(1) Ranney 17, (8) Marlboro 0 (5 Innings)

Brett Wehringer belted a three-run home run during a five-run first inning and finished with four RBI as the Panthers hammered the Mustangs to advance to the SCT semifinal round with their 17th straight win.

Jack Tallent opened the scoring with the first of his two RBI doubles -- one of five run-scoring doubles the Panthers hit on Monday. Diego Tavarez hit an RBI double in the second, A.J. Gracia hit a two-run double and Curtis Chropuvka hit a three-run double in the third, and both Tallent and Wehringer hit RBI doubles in the fourth.

Ranney will take on No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven Thursday at Count Basie Park in a rematch of the Monmouth County Tournament semifinal between the two teams, which Ranney won, 4-3, in eight innings.

(4) Rumson-Fair Haven 2, (5) Jackson Memorial 1

Brayden Dill doubled twice, including the go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, and John Goodes outdueled Anthony Mehmet in a battle of aces as the Bulldogs held off the Jaguars to reach the SCT semifinals Thursday at Count Basie Park against top-seeded Ranney.

Dill doubled and scored on an RBI single by Spencer Hobson to open the scoring in the bottom of the second inning for Rumson.

Jackson Memorial responded when Mike Arent clubbed an opposite-field solo home run to make it 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jack Riva ignited the winning rally with a single and Dill followed with what proved to be the game-winning double that brought Riva in.

Rumson threatened to tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Reece Moroney singled and went to third on an errant pickoff attempt with one out. Mehmet got a key strikeout and Tommy Mazzella came on to induce an inning-ending groundout after Mehmet reached his pitch limit for the game. Mehmet entered the game eligible to throw 88 pitches.

Goodes's two-hitter was his first complete game of the season and Monday marked the first time the Rutgers commit pitched into the sixth inning since an April 19 win over Wall.

(6) CBA 5, (3) Donovan Catholic 1

James Nitti drove in two runs, Wyatt Hunt drilled a two-run home run and Chris Levonas struck out 10 in five innings as the Colts upended the Griffins, snapping Donovan Catholic's 14-game winning streak while advancing to the SCT semifinals Thursday against Red Bank Catholic at Count Basie Park.

Nitti's safety squeeze bunt plated two runs, the second of which scored on an error and gave CBA a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Nitti struck again in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to score Harrison Campi and extend the CBA lead to 3-1.

Hunt gave CBA some loud insurance with his two-run shot to right-centerfield in the top of the sixth inning.

Levonas allowed a lone run in the second inning and took control from there before passing the ball to right-hander Brennan O'Keefe. After Levonas struck out 10 over five innings, O'Keefe finished off the win with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
