It's time for the Week 4 installment of the Surf Taco Boys Soccer Player of the Week vote. This week's version features some of the power teams of the Shore Conference, as well as a couple of players from two of the resurgent teams in the area. Check out all of the recognized players from the last week and vote for the one who had the best week of them all in the poll at the bottom of the post. Voting ends Wednesday at 10 p.m.
Class A North Player of the Week
Bennett Messinger, Freehold Twp.
Back on Monday, Sept. 24, Messinger scored a golden goal for the second straight game to help his team escape with a 2-1 win over Rumson-Fair Haven. The junior midfielder later capped his week with two goals in a 3-0 road win over Fair Lawn on Saturday.
A North Honorable Mention: Dylan Dougher, Howell; Danny Minze, Middletown South; Jack Gill, CBA; Jonathan Santos, Middletown South; Mike Anello, Howell; Mike Kuver, Manalapan; Cristian Corcione, Freehold Twp.; Isaac Ball, Freehold Boro; Max Spivak, Marlboro
Class A Central Player of the Week
Mark McStay, Holmdel
The Hornets made it through another week unbeaten and might not have done so without McStay and his nose for the goal in crunch time. The senior midfielder scored the game-winning goal in 2-1 wins over both Matawan and Manasquan, both of which came in the final 10 minutes.
A Central Honorable Mention: Nick Bavaro, Raritan; Diego Volpe, Red Bank Catholic; Chris Anfuso, Monmouth; Jack Giamanco, Holmdel
Class A South Player of the Week
Dan Russo, Jackson Memorial
Like Holmdel, Jackson Memorial finished September with a perfect record and needed to escape a scare this week to get there. Colts Neck pushed the Jaguars to overtime on Sept. 24 but Russo ended the threat with a golden goal – his second score of the game. The junior forward added a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over Brick later in the week.
A South Honorable Mention: John Crist, Brick; Pete Kozlej, Toms River East; Nico Garcia, Toms River North; Dylan Blauvelt, Southern; Gianni Smith, Central; Dane Bodziak, Toms River East
Class B North Player of the Week
Leonardo Montesinos, Ocean
Last week was a big one for Ocean and the Spartans got through it with a respectable 2-1 record. Montesinos delivered a goal in all three games, two of which were 1-0 wins over Long Branch and Colts Neck. His free kick goal on Friday cut CBA’s lead to 2-1 in the first half and set the stage for James Schutz to tie it up in the second half, only to see CBA answer with the game-winner three minutes later.
B North Honorable Mention: Riley Powers, Wall; Zach Sintic, Ocean; Jon Paul Valencia, Red Bank; Wilby Alfred, Neptune; Johnny Volpe, Wall; Aidan Cardella, Midd North; Marcelo Colonna, Matawan; Tommy Zalepka, Matawan; Andre Wells, Matawan; Max Winters, Ocean
Class B Central Player of the Week
Ki Costa, Point Beach
Over the course of last week, Costa doubled his goal total for the season, scoring five in two wins over Asbury Park and Ranney to up his season total to 10. The senior scored two in a 4-0 win over Asbury Park and put up a hat trick in a 3-1 win over the Panthers.
B Central Honorable Mention: Ademola Odunlami, Ranney; Sean Matos, Keyport; Barrett Bremekamp, Henry Hudson
Class B South Player of the Week
Steven Redler, Point Boro
After missing time due to injury at the beginning of the season, Redler has returned to the goal and made a significant impact for Point Boro. The junior posted three shutouts in three games last week, which marked the Panthers’ first three wins of the season after starting 0-8. After notching shutouts against Donovan Catholic and Jackson Liberty (in overtime), Redler and the Point Boro defense blanked Neptune and Shore Conference leading scorer Wilby Alfred in a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
B South Honorable Mention: Morris Vasquez, Lakewood; Logan Duffy, Manchester; Mike Cyphers, Lacey; Matt White, Barnegat; Kieran Sundermann, Pinelands; Vin Loffredo, Donovan Catholic
Wild Cards
Jonathan Santos, Middletown South
Santos and teammate Danny Mize led the scoring effort during a huge week for Middletown South, which has rallied from a 1-5 start to reach the .500 mark at 5-5. Santos assisted on of his team’s three goals in a 3-2 win over Middletown North on Sept. 24, then scored a goal each in one-goal wins over Manalapan and Manasquan. His goal against Manasquan on Saturday proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 Eagles victory.
Jack Gill, CBA
CBA continued its stellar season last week by winning two tightly-contested matches on the road against teams that have been ranked this season. First was a 2-1, overtime over Freehold Boro in which Gill delivered the golden goal early in the first period of extra time. CBA followed that win with an exciting, 3-2 win over No. 4 Ocean, with Gill assisting all three CBA goals.
