The final Surf Taco Boys Soccer Player of the Week contest of 2022 will be one that features the best of the best from the tail-end of the NJSIAA Tournament. Six players (no more than one per team) made their mark on the last two rounds of the sectional tournaments and the group semifinals and finals and are in the running for the last Player of the Week honor of the now-finished 2022 season.

Read up on the six standouts who could be the last Player of the Week this fall and vote once per hour until the poll closes on Thursday at 10 p.m. The winner will be announced on Friday and awarded a $25 gift card to Surf Taco.

Nick DiNapoli, Shore

Shore made its deepest run in the state tournament in eight years, winning the Central Jersey Group I championship and bowing out to eventual overall Group I champion Haddon Township in a wild, 6-3 game. The Blue Devils had a deep collection of goal-scorers in their last three games, led by Attaway with three, but DiNapoli scored the two biggest goals of the tournament for Shore. With the sectional final at Florence tied, 1-1, DiNapoli scored the game-winner in the 54th minute and added one in the 76th to effectively clinch the championship for the Blue Devils.

Bo Pepe, Wall

Pepe was Mr. Clutch for Wall at several points this season, scoring four total goals with three of them proving to be game-winners. He scored a golden goal to beat Rumson-Fair Haven in the regular-season and a late-regulation goal to beat Ocean in the Shore Conference Tournament. His biggest goal, however, was his second golden goal of the season, which beat South River, 2-1, and sent the Crimson Knights to the Central Jersey Group II final.

Will Thygeson, CBA

After missing the majority of the Shore Conference Tournament due to injury, Thygeson made up for lost time and then some in the state tournament. After scoring in CBA’s first-round win over St. John Vianney, he then delivered two of the biggest goals of CBA’s 19-1 season. The senior converted the game-winner in the 68th minute of CBA’s South Jersey Non-Public A championship win over St. Peter’s Prep, the delivered the championship-winning goal in the 77th minute of a 1-0 win over Seton Hall Prep in the Non-Public A final.

Jake Visco, Freehold Twp.

Visco began the season coming off the bench and by the end of the year, he had emerged as a big-game goal-scorer for the Central Jersey Group IV champions. A big reason Freehold Township won that second straight Central Group IV title was Visco, who accounted for the only goal in a 1-0, championship win over Monroe on Nov. 5. The senior finished with four of his six goals for the season coming in the state tournament, with one in each of the final two rounds of the Central Group IV sectional playoffs.

James Vitale, St. Rose

For the first time in 12 years, St. Rose captured a sectional championship and earned the right to play in the Non-Public B championship game. The last two games of the season were 0-0 draws that went to penalty kicks, but before that, the Purple Roses put up seven goals in two games and Vitale had a lot to do with that scoring damage. The senior scored two goals each in wins over Princeton Day and Moorestown Friends – four of his five goals during his senior season.

David Weiner, Holmdel

Holmdel returned to the top of Central Jersey Group II section, winning its first sectional title in four years – doing so without allowing a goal during its four-game run to the championship. Weiner aided in the scoring in a sectional semifinal win over Manasquan with a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win. After his Hornets won the sectional final over Wall, 1-0, Weiner scored the first goal of the game in Holmdel’s 2-1 loss at Delran in the Group II championship games.
