After leading Matawan to the greatest heights its program has seen in 50 years, boys basketball coach Tom Stead said Wednesday that he has stepped down after eight seasons with the Huskies.

"I am looking to do other things with my career,'' Stead said. "I will never forget what we were able to achieve here and the way these kids came together as a family to accomplish great things."

This past season, Stead led the Huskies to a 15-12 season and a trip to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II semifinals. He also picked up his 300th career victory in a season-opening win over Neptune.

In 2014, he was the Shore Sports Network Coach of the Year after leading Matawan to its first NJSIAA sectional title since 1957 in winning Central Jersey Group II. He also led the Huskies to a 24-5 season, their first division title since 1965 and their first trip to the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals since that same season.

He took Matawan from the depths of an 0-24 season in his first year to the heights of its best campaign in more than half a century in 2014. Matawan had endured 14 straight losing seasons before he helped engineer the program's turnaround with five straight winning seasons. Matawan also produced a Division I player in senior guard Jason Dunne, who is headed to Hartford.

Stead is coming off his 19th season overall as a head coach after having previously been at Holmdel, which he led to a pair of Group II championships and trips to the Tournament of Champions.
