Ocean County Sports Medicine Week 3 Player of the Week

Alex Frank, Marlboro

On a team with five new starters compared to last season’s 28-win team, Frank has been Marlboro’s top scorer and carried that torch last week. He scored  a team-high 16 points in a win over Howell, went for a career-high 29 in an overtime loss at Robbinsville, then poured in 12 in a road win over No. 7 Freehold Township – the latter of which is Marlboro’s biggest win of the season to date.

Frank's career-high performance kept the Mustangs neck-and-neck with a Ravens team that reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III final a year ago. A three-pointer by junior Daniel Emasri sent the game to overtime and Marlboro was tied, 71-71, with a minute left on the clock in the extra session. As replays on the Robbinsville live stream showed, the clock operator put five minutes on the clock instead of the required four for overtime and the officials never corrected the error.

Robbinsville outscored Marlboro, 5-0, in the final 56 seconds and won, 76-71.

Frank and his team bounced back in grand fashion with a 60-58 win over a Freehold Township squad that entered the game ranked No. 4 in the Shore Sports Network Top 10. Frank put up 12 points for the Mustangs, who led by seven with a minute left and survived a potential game-winning three-point attempt at the buzzer.

In his team's 12 games through this weekend, Frank is averaging 17.2 points per game and has scored in double-figures in 11 of them.

The Week 3 vote was as close as it could possibly be, with Frank beating out runner-up Jaycen Santucci -- the sophomore guard from Central Regional -- by a single vote, 192-191. Frank's vote total represented 21.8 percent of the votes cast, while Santucci's was 21.7. Six of the 10 nominees earned double-digit vote percentages: Frank, Santucci, Middletown South senior Pat Brown (15.5 percent), Neptune senior Anthony Banks (13.4), Lakewood senior Derrick Marsh (11.8) and Southern senior Pat Gaffney (10.6)

For winning the first Player of the Week contest, Frank will receive a $25 gift card to Burger 25.
