Last year was the first season during Mike Gawronski's first eight years as head coach at Brick in which his Green Dragons did not win more games than they did the season before. After graduating all of its impact talent from the previous season, Brick sank to 2-18 on the year.

There was one saving grace, however: one of the two wins in 2019-20 came against crosstown rival Brick Memorial.

The Green Dragons got a taste for beating the Mustangs and there was only one way to top that part of last season in 2021: beat Brick Memorial twice.

Last week, Brick won two thrilling games against the rival Mustangs for their first two wins of 2021 and surpassed last year's win total by beating Lakewood on Tuesday, earning the Green Dragons the third Shore Sports Network Jersey Mike's Team of the Week award in 2021.

On Feb. 16, Brick trailed for most of the first meeting with Brick Memorial, but the Dragons rallied on their home floor. Senior Ty Williams scored on a baseline drive to tie the game in the final minute before Brick Memorial drew a foul on the other end, with Mustangs senior Hayden Guzenski hitting one of two free throws.

With just seconds remaining, Williams took the inbound pass, raced up the floor, split two defenders and flipped up a shot off the glass and in as time expired to cap a 38-37 Brick win.

Three nights after celebrating on their home floor, the Green Dragons took the party across town to Brick Memorial. Trailing by three heading into the final 1:30, the Dragons again rallied. Senior Joaquin Ragland hit a corner three-pointer to tie the game at 41 and with 45 seconds left, sophomore Alex Jenkoski nailed another three from the right wing to propel Brick to a 44-41 win and a sweep of the Mustangs.

After dropping their fourth loss of the season to Ocean on Monday, Brick responded by handing Lakewood on Tuesday and will look to even its record at 4-4 Thursday in the second game of the week vs. the winless Piners.
