The men and women who wear the black and white stripes and officiate basketball games in the shore area have for the last six years participated in the national “Officials vs. Cancer” campaign and have helped raise over $35,000 for the American Cancer Society.  That effort got a boost on Saturday and it came because of their own generosity.

During the past three seasons the Monmouth-Ocean County Parochial Basketball League has supported the efforts of Shore Board #194 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.  The league hosts an annual “Snowball Classic” during which the officials donate their referee services and game fees towards cancer research through the national program.

At halftime of the boys Shore Conference Tournament finals at Monmouth University Mike Fogarty, a veteran referee and President of the MOCPBL presented a check in the amount of $2400 to George Fixter, incoming President of Shore Board 194 I.A.A.B.O. in support of the “Officials vs. Cancer” campaign.

You may not always agree with the calls they make on the court but off the court basketball officials of the Jersey Shore are doing their part in the fight against cancer.
