Mike Falco pitched a five-inning perfect game with nine strikeouts and the Bears (18-7) rolled through the Patriots (13-10) and into a sectional quarterfinal showdown at No. 2 Manalapan on Tuesday.

 

 

Central Jersey Group III

(1) Wall 1, (8) Steinert 0

Doug Wetzel singled home Nick Castoral with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Crimson Knights (19-4) walked off a winner of the Spartans (16-7) to move on to the sectional semifinals Tuesday against No. 4 Hopewell Valley.

Catcher David Howarth led off the seventh with a double and Castoral came on to courtesy run for him. After advancing to third on a ground out, Castoral trotted home on Wetzel's winning single to left field.

Wall has won both its NJSIAA Tournament games by a score of 1-0 and Wetzel has provided the lone run with an RBI single in each. He checked in with an RBI single in the second inning of Monday's 1-0 win over No. 16 Lawrence.

Trey Dombroski pitched a four-hit shutout Thursday with seven strikeouts and no walks to improve to 7-1.

 

(2) Jackson Liberty 15, (10) Pennsauken 5 (6 Innings)

Connor Keenan went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, including one in an eight-run sixth inning that helped the Lions (20-3) pull away from the Indians (11-8) to advance to the sectional semifinals Tuesday against defending Group III champion No. 3 Allentown. The win was also the 20th of the season for Jackson Liberty, which sets a program record.

Shane Hickey belted a solo home run, Charlie Rudderow cracked an RBI double and Billy Hart was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Jackson Liberty.

Matt Pickus allowed five runs on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings and struck out eight in earning the win on 90 pitches. Nick DeCarlo struck out two of the four batters he faced to finish off the game.

Jake Tennant belted a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and Ryan Kasmer and Dan Fiore each added a two-run single in the sixth to lead the Rockets past the Scotties and into the sectional semifinals Tuesday at Voorhees.

Jude Lovgren homered on the second batter of the game to ignite a five-run first-inning that carried the Garnet Gulls (16-7) to a win over the Warriors (11-6).

Hunter Alia was 1-for-4 with two RBI, Jean Verrier was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Vincent Storino was 1-for-3 with an RBI and both Josh Yates and Alec Glen were 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Chris Russo allowed two runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. He struck out five, walked none and threw 71 pitches. John Nista threw the first 1 2/3 and allowed a run on a hit and two walks with four strikeouts and 46 pitches.

Lovgren closed the game out with a scoreless seventh to send the Garnet Gulls to the sectional semifinals Tuesday at top-seeded Middlesex.

Brandon Matt hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth and Ryan Bearse hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rebels (13-11) fell short in their comeback effort against the Fighting Clan (13-6) after falling behind, 6-1.

Trailing 6-5 and down to its last out in the seventh, Howell rallied with no one on base. Nick Ruszczyk was hit by a pitch to start it and Matt ripped a single into left to set the stage for Bearse, who dropped a single into shallow right field to chase home Ruszczyk.

Jose Mateo delivered a two-out double to scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and send Vineland to the sectional semifinals Tuesday at No. 3 Jackson Memorial.

Matt finished 2-for-5, Bearse was 2-for-4 with a double and Nick Ruszczyk went 2-for-5 with two runs scored for Howell.

Mike Wynne took the loss, but not before providing 5 1/3 innings of strong relief for the Rebels. Wynne allowed just the one earned run on four hits and four walks while striking out six and throwing 82 pitches.

South Jersey Group II

(5) Point Boro 9, (13) Barnegat 1

Sam Collins pitched a four-hitter and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Panthers (17-7) past the Bengals (8-16) and into the sectional semifinals against top-seeded West Deptford.

Collins surrendered a run on a Tyler Suydam RBI single in the top of the first and was spotless the rest of the way, racking up six strikeouts against just one walk while throwing 82 pitches.

Nick Zbikowski was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Sam Young was 1-for-1 with two RBI for Point Boro, which drew nine walks as a team.

 

(1) West Deptford 6, (9) Manasquan 2

Dylan Finn double, scored a run and drove in another, but the Eagles (18-6) scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to seize control and beat the Warriors (9-12) in a rematch of last year's sectional final.

James Harmstead allowed one earned run on two hits and four walks while striking out eight over five innings. Denny Maher was 2-for-3 and Mike Anthony was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Manasquan.

 

 

Opening Round

South Jersey Non-Public A

(7) St. John Vianney 11, (10) Bishop Ahr 1 (5 Innings)

The top four hitters in St. John Vianney's lineup combined to go 9-for-12 with four extra-base hits, nine runs scored and four RBI to lead the Lancers (11-7) to a rout of the Trojans (5-20).

Evan Perrette was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI and Robert Skinner was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Luciano Fabrizzi also went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored and Spencer Margulis finished 2-for-3 with a run scored in the win.

Frank D'Alessio went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Chris Caragliano was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Jack Owens doubled and scored a run for Vianney.

Brendan Martin allowed one run on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts over four innings and 71 pitches to earn the win.

(3) St. Rose 12, (14) Wildwood Catholic 2

Riley Maypother went 2-for-3 with a an RBI double, RBI triple and three runs scored to lead the Purple Roses (19-6) to a win over the Crusaders (4-12).

Phil Morelli was 1-for-2 with three RBI and Jeff DeFazio added a two-run double for St. Rose. Brody Maypother also went  1-for-1 with three runs and an RBI in the win.

Nick Schmidt pitched a two-hitter over five innings to pick up the complete-game victory. He gave up one walk and struck out five while throwing 58 pitches.
