Baseball – Point Beach’s Matuschat, Pinelands’s DeMilio Capture Week 2 Player and Pitcher of the Week
Ocean County Sports Medicine Week 2 Player of the Week
Colin Matuschat, Point Beach
Point Beach ran the table last week and Matuschat’s bat was on fire during the five-game winning streak. The senior went 8-for-14 with a double, triple and eight RBI, including an RBI in a 5-4 win over Group IV West Windsor-Plainsboro South to cap the week.
Matuschat is off to a strong start to his senior season despite undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL in the offseason, which initially put his status for this season in jeopardy, according to Point Beach assistant coach Joe Mazza.
Matuschat won the Week 2 contest with 24 percent of the vote, beating out a pair of nominees who locked up in a tight race for second place. Barnegat's P.J. Craig finished second with 19.1 percent and St. John Vianney's Brady Oswick took third with 18.7.
Ocean County Sports Medicine Week 2 Pitcher of the Week
Stephen DeMilio, Pinelands
Pinelands picked up a huge win over Jackson Liberty to bounce back from losing two games against Lacey and on April 14, the Wildcats showed that first win over the Lions was no fluke thanks to DeMilio. The senior right-hander pitched a five-hit shutout to beat Jackson Liberty 1-0, striking out 12 and walking none.
In the first win over Jackson Liberty, DeMilio beat the Lions with his bat, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
DeMilio won the Week 2 contest with 35 percent of the vote, beating out runner-up Anthony Longo from Keyport (24.5 percent).
For winning the Player and Pitcher of the Week awards, both Matuschat and DeMilio will receive a Player of the Week shirt courtesy of Ocean County Sports Medicine.
