High-School Resume
Dombroski is a two-time Shore Sports Network Pitcher of the Year Award winner and a three-time All-Shore selection at Wall. The left-hander posted one of the best junior-senior-year combinations of anyone on the mound in the Shore Conference over the last quarter century, with Christian Brothers Academy alumnus Luca Dalatri the only pitcher that rivals what Dombroski did in posting a 0.45 ERA in 140 2/3 innings over those two seasons.
On top of the individual accolades, Dombroski led Wall to the NJSIAA Group III championship as a senior in 2019, winning four out of Wall’s six postseason games – including the last two over Cherry Hill West and West Morris to wrap up the championship run.
After High School
Dombroski went from putting together one of the greatest careers in Wall Baseball history to one of the best ever in Monmouth University Baseball. Dombroski set a new single-season Monmouth record with 120 strikeouts this past season while going 6-2 with a 3.13 ERA in 95 innings while exhibiting the same elite command he had in high school. Dombroski issued only 14 walks and surrendered 80 hits, giving him a WHIP below 1.00 for the season.
Upon completing his junior season at Monmouth, Dombroski was named MAAC Pitcher of the Year and an All-American by both Collegiate Baseball News (Second Team) and the American Baseball Coaches Association (Third Team). Prior to his record-setting senior year at Monmouth, Dombroski was recognized as the top pitcher in the 2021 Cape Code League – the most prestigious of the summer baseball leagues around the country.
Why Teams Like Him
Dombroski has an advanced feel for pitching that was obvious as a high-school ace at Wall. He had serious interest from multiple MLB clubs coming out of Wall, but with his fastball sitting in the high 80’s, the prevailing wisdom was for Dombroski to keep pounding the strike zone at Monmouth while increasing his strength and improving his overall quality of stuff.
That project has worked out nicely, as Dombroski now sits with a fastball at 91 and has shown the ability to touch 94. He also controls two quality breaking balls and a comfortably-above-average changeup. The four-pitch mix with elite control will entice some teams in the back-end of the top-100 picks.
Why Teams Might Hesitate
While it has improved, Dombroski’s velocity is still below average by prospect standards. He has always resisted getting caught up in the radar gun and prefers to let his game-day pitching do the talking, but pitching in the low-90’s will give some organizations pause and will likely mean Dombroski has to prove himself along the way a little more than the prospects with bigger fastballs. With that being said, there are pitchers in the Majors right now with similar velocity profiles and pitch mixes and it won’t be too long before a team jumps at the chance to add Dombroski and his impressive track record to its organization.
Based on the current buzz, Dombroski could expect his name to be called as early as the third round and should be off the board by the end of the sixth.
