Back To Where It All Began [AUDIO]
High School Football and 92.7 WOBM were made for one another so when the radio station first began broadcasting in 1968 right out of the box they followed Toms River High School football which soon became TR South. Later WOBM became the radio home of the Brick “Green Dragons” with Bob Levy broadcasting many of the games that helped establish Warren Wolf’s team as a state power.
By the time I arrived in 1979 the radio station was no longer carrying games although I did convince management to air a couple of special broadcasts in the early 1980’s with Levy and I working together. Things were silent after that until 1995 when we began airing Friday Night broadcasts of Ocean County games on WOBM-FM and after two seasons those games were moved to sister stations where they have been since. This is the 23rd consecutive year I have broadcast high school football games, almost all of them with longtime partners Matt Harmon and Ed Sarluca.
I mention this because tonight and on a limited basis Ocean County High School Football returns to 92.7FM as tonight’s Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week finds us at Toms River South for their annual rivalry meeting against Toms River East. The 7pm kickoff will be simulcast as well on 1160 & 1310AM where they regularly air and will be the first of six Friday Night games to be heard in such a fashion. Since this is the 50th anniversary year of Ocean County’s first radio station we thought it would be fun to go back to our roots so to speak.
There is some irony in a Toms River South game being the first as part of this new-old experiment. When Bob Levy first did those Indians games in the late 60’s the head coach was Ron Signorino and 50 years later that position belongs to his son Ron Signorino Jr. However “Big Sig” will not only be at Detweiler Stadium tonight but on the sidelines….he helps coach the running backs. Who says you can’t go back in time?
