Monmouth County Tournament

Semifinal

(8) Wall 7, (13) Marlboro 6

Junior Drew Jarkowski hit a hard ground ball that ate up Marlboro second baseman Julien Umanzor, allowing the winning run to score with two out in the bottom of the seventh and sending the Crimson Knights past the Mustangs and into the Monmouth County Tournament final Wednesday at Brookdale against Middletown South.

Marlboro scored five runs in the first two innings, highlighted by a two-run single by junior Alex D'Ambrosio during a four-run second inning. Wall knocked three runs off the deficit in the bottom of the fourth, with junior Colin MacDermant singling home a run in the rally.

After junior Danny Talarico tripled home Marlboro's sixth run in the fifth, Wall strung together a game-tying rally in the bottom of the sixth, with senior Nick Lovarco slapping a game-tying RBI single to rightfield with two out. Before that, senior Jackson Coan cut the deficit to 6-5 with a two-run single.

Sophomore Jake Howlett and MacDermant drew back-to-back one-out walks in the bottom of the seventh and moved up a base on a wild pitch. With two out and 3-2 count, Jarkowski -- who entered the game as a pinch-hitter and took over at third base when senior Andrew Fischer took over on the mound in the top of the seventh -- hit a sinking line drive toward Umanzor, who was caught in between and tried, unsuccessfully, to backhand the ball off the dirt as senior Jake Layton raced home with the winning run.
