Class A Central

Holmdel 5, St. Rose 4

St. Rose pitchers Jack Lomerson and Chris Tallarico pitched a combined no-hitter, but the Hornets (2-12, 1-11) found a way to score five runs, including the winning run in the top of the seventh, to close out the Purple Roses (3-13, 2-10) for their second straight win after a 12-game losing streak to open the season.

Senior Sean Brescia created the winning run with his legs after he was hit by a pitch leading off the seventh inning. Brescia stole second and upon stealing third, the throw from home bounded into leftfield, allowing the Holmdel senior to scamper home.

Holmdel worked seven walks against St. Rose pitching and took advantage of four errors by the Purple Roses. Junior Tim Haggerty drew two of the walks.

Junior Elliot Chun pitched all seven innings for Holmdel and earned the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Lomerson pitched the first five innings of St. Rose's no-hitter, striking out six, but also walking seven while allowing four runs -- three of which were earned. Tallarico allowed an unearned run while walking one and striking out two.

Lomerson also went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the St. Rose lineup. Sophomore Jack Tiernan doubled and scored a run and freshman Max Glassberg was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

Central 1, Barnegat 0

Senior Nick Kozack scored the game's lone run as the result of some small-ball by Central and the Golden Eagles rode a dominant pitching performance from seniors Shane Sajewicz, Ryan Burke and Cam Leiter to shutout the Bengals.

In the top of the fifth, Kozack led off with a walk, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored the deciding run on another wild pitch.

Sajewicz took the ball to start and recorded the first two outs of the sixth before ending his outing and passing the ball to Burke, who struck out the last batter of the sixth.

Burke walked the first two batters of the seventh and gave way to Leiter, who struck out the first batter he faced before a wild pitch moved the runners up to put the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

Leiter locked in and struck out another for the second out and ended the game by catching a check-swing line drive back to the mound.

Central's combined shutout foiled a combined one-hitter by Barnegat's senior trio of Jared Schworn, Ryan Kulpa and P.J. Craig.
