Jackson Memorial 4, Central 3
Zach Crotchfelt helped his cause with a solo home run to open the scoring and later scored what proved to be the deciding run after doubling in the top of the fifth inning as the Jaguars rode their Auburn-bound left-handed ace to a key win over the Golden Eagles and their ace, Cam Leiter.
Crotchfelt ripped a solo homer off a 3-2 fastball from Leiter with one out in the top of the second and junior Charlie Meglio added to the lead with a two-out, two-run single into centerfield during the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the third, senior right fielder Tommy Kendrick kept Central off the scoreboard when he collected a single into right by Central sophomore Cristian Soto and fired a strike to catcher Aidan O'Donnell to cut down the would-be run.
Central fought back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, when senior Shane Sajewicz doubled to the gap in right-centerfield, stole third base and scored on an RBI infield single by senior Anthony Musso.
Jackson Memorial added to its lead in the fifth when Crotchfelt ripped a double into the rightfield corner and scored on an RBI single by senior Andrew Patire. Central took its turn throwing out a runner at home plate, with Musso quickly getting the ball into the infield on Crotchfelt's double and junior shortstop Dom Masino re-directing it to the plate for the first out of the fifth.
Central drew closer with a two-run single by junior Chase Pierce, which scored both Sajewicz and Leiter after each reached base -- Sajewicz on a single, Leiter with a walk -- and advanced on a passed ball.
Kendrick came through with another huge throw in the bottom of the seventh, charging another single to right by Soto and unleashing a bullet to third base to cut down the potential tying run for the second out.
Crotchfelt walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh to surpass the single-game pitch total permitted by NJSIAA rules, leaving the chore of closing the game to junior left-hander Andy Osmond. In addition to the assist from Kendrick, Osmond struck out two in earning his first save.
