A thrilling 8-4 win by freshman Paul Jakub over returning state qualifier Joe Sacco in the opening bout set the tone for the top-ranked Rebels (19-0) as they took 10 of 14 bouts to throttle the Tigers in a battle of teams ranked in the state top 20.

Trailing 4-3, Jakub threw Sacco to his back with a five-point move with 10 seconds left to get Howell's gym rocking. The Rebels won the first five bouts to take a 20-0 lead and never looked back to further their case as the best public school team in New Jersey. Ethan Liptzin won by fall at 113 pounds while Xavier Kelly (152), Shane Reitsma (170) and Kyle Slendorn (132) supplied technical falls and Christian Murphy (182) and Dan Esposito (138) won by major decision.

Darby Diedrich, the state seventh-place finisher at 120 pounds last season, defeated state qualifier David Loniewski, 6-3, at 120 pounds. Diedrich made 120 flat and wrestled at 120 for the first time since the opening weekend. Evan Richard (160) and Scott Prendergast also won by decision for Howell.

Joe Heilmann, the state third-place finisher at 120 pounds last season, won by 17-6 major decision over Luke Rada at 126 pounds and Zach DelVecchio, the state fourth-place finisher at 220 pounds last season, won by 18-6 major decision over Joe Sardina at 220 to lead South Plainfield.
