This is shaping up to be another great baseball season with dramatic games day after day that often involve Division I talent going head-to-head in pressure spots.

Thursday was highlighted by a pair of wins by Christian Brothers Academy in two sports. A 1-0, eight-inning nail-biter in a pitchers' duel against Marlboro, and an 8-7 win in lacrosse against a young, up-and-coming Manasquan team. Make sure to check out the story and video highlights by Matt Manley from the CBA baseball win.

There were plenty of strong performances on Thursday as always. I am no longer ranking the top 10 performers because I realized I opened Pandora's box with that. My whole goal was to give recognition to more athletes on a daily basis, not have arguments over where each performance ranked, so now I've made an adjustment.

Here are Thursday's Top 10 performers IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER.

John Salcedo, Jr., Midfielder, CBA

Salcedo helped the Colts win a Top 10 showdown on the road against Manasquan with three goals and two assists in an 8-7 win to keep No. 3 CBA unbeaten against Shore Conference competition this season.

Donald Zellman, So., P, Lacey

Zellman helped the Lions move to 3-2 for the season after winning six games all of last year with a complete-game five-hitter in a big 4-3 win over Jackson Memorial in Class A South. Zellman is part of a talented sophomore class that looks to make the Lions a darkhorse contender in the division this season.

Ryan Orender, Sr., P, Wall

Orender allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five in five innings while also belting a double and scoring a run in a 5-2 nondivisional win over Jackson Liberty in a match-up of defending division champions.

Luca Dalatri, Jr., P, CBA

Dalatri ended with a no decision in the Colts' 1-0 win over Marlboro on a game-winning RBI single by outfielder Will Morgan, but he was dominating for seven innings before coming out of the game. He had a no-hitter going for 6 2/3 innings before allowing a lone single. He struck out 11 and walked one.

Henry Sillen, Jr., Attack, Rumson-Fair Haven

Sillen had three goals and three assists to get the No. 2 Bulldogs into the win column after a rare 0-4 start with an 11-3 win over No. 4 St. John Vianney in Class B North.

Jeremy Dyzenhaus, Jr., P, Marlboro

Dyzenhaus dueled with CBA ace Luca Dalatri, matching him with seven straight scoreless frames to start the game before the Colts scratched a run across against him in the eighth inning to win it. He struck out six in the loss with coaches from Monmouth University looking on.

Dan Vilardi, Sr., Midfielder, Red Bank

The Bucs were able to pick up a solid 7-6 nondivisional win over Lacey (4-2) as Vilardi scored a game-high three goals.

Mark Buannic, Sr., A, Howell

Buannic and the Rebels matched their best start in program history at 5-0 with a 10-7 nonconference win over East Brunswick in which Buannic had a goal and three assists.

Matt Cuppari, Jr., SS, Brick Memorial

Cuppari went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases to wrap up a great week down in Florida in a 10-9 win over Landsdown (Va.). He went 6-for-14 with two doubles and seven runs scored during the Mustangs' trip to Tampa.

Mike Marron, So., INF/OF, Donovan Catholic

Marron went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run triple, to help the Griffins end their Florida trip on a high note with an 11-2 over Paideia (Fla.).

More on Friday:

  • Two Shore Conference grads figured heavily in the Cincinnati Reds' walk-off win over the Pirates on Thursday as third baseman Todd Frazier (Toms River South/Rutgers) doubled and scored the winning run in the ninth on an error, and Anthony DeSclafani (Colts Neck) looked great in his Reds' debut after being traded by the Marlins in the offseason. He struck out six in six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
  • A day after working out at the Giants' pro day, Monmouth University wide receiver Neal Sterling (Manasquan) is doing the same today for the Jets.
  • A survivor of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010 who had his house fall on top of him is now one step from his NBA dream as part of the incoming class at Kentucky.
  • Sad news about the death of the inspirational Lauren Hill, who didn't let an inoperable brain tumor stop her from her dream of playing college basketball.
  • Baseball is better with characters like Hunter Pence.
  • Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham helped fly a woman in medical need in his plane to see a specialist.
  • Mixed reviews on the debut of the pitch clock in minor-league baseball yesterday.
  • The Nationals are playing soft songs by Sarah McLachlan, R.E.M. and more to mess with the heads of opposing teams during batting practice.
  • How Game of Thrones went from an odd idea to a huge hit.

On tap for today: Only a handful of baseball games are even still scheduled thanks to all the rain, and more thunderstorms are headed here for the afternoon. The only lacrosse game is Marlboro at Howell at noon.

I'll end with the ridiculous catch by White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton, a medley of Anthony DeSclafani's strikeouts from yesterday, and the trailer for "True Detective 2."
