Dean Peterson, Kyle Slendorn, Jake Benner and Rob Kanniard suffered losses in the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships state finals, but have plenty of reasons to hold their heads high.

St. John Vianney's Dean Peterson, Howell's Kyle Slendorn, Ocean's Jake Benner, Toms River South's Cole Corrigan and Wall's Rob Kanniard advanced to the state finals at the NJSIAA Wrestling Championships in Atlantic City.

Nico Messina became Freehold's first region champion since 1964, Brick Memorial's Ean Mueller won the 170-pound title in the final seconds and Point Boro's Francis Marshall won a region title in just his second year wrestling to highlight the 2018 Region 6 Tournament.

Lacey's Hunter Gutierrez and Luke Gauthier and Howell's Kyle Slendorn and Darby Diedrich were among 14 wrestlers who won titles at the first Shore Conference Individual Wrestling Championships.
