Summer Football Action

Congratulations to Joe Gomulka of Toms River, who has been named the new Athletic Director at Monsignor Donovan High School where he’ll succeed the retired Dennis Toddings. Gomulka has had a successful career as the Griffins Girls Cross-Country coach and has also coached track there and most recently Middletown South.

He retired this month as a guidance counselor in the Middletown School District to take the Donovan job. The longtime captain of the Seaside Park Beach Patrol, Gomulka is a 1975 Central Regional High School graduate.

Toddings began his career at then St. Joseph High School in 1976 and in 1994 he succeeded Steve Gepp as Athletic Director, a position he held until retiring last month. Previous to becoming AD Denny was the Griffins football coach and in retirement he’s going back to the gridiron as he’ll help out at Jackson Liberty this season.

There was plenty of activity at Toms River High School East last night as that was the sight of the Ocean County 7-on-7 High School football tournament. It’s all part of the U.S. Army All-Shore Gridiron Classic as 7-on-7’s have become a popular way for teams to work on their passing games in a competitive atmosphere.

All but one Ocean County school took part last night in a 16-team event with Lacey beating Barnegat in the championship game. The Lions earn the right to play Monmouth County champion Howell before Thursday’s Ocean-Monmouth game at Holmdel High School.

There’s an irony to that. Cory Davies retired as the head coach at Howell this spring following 21seasons with the Rebels in which he built one of the shore’s most prolific passing games. A Lacey Township resident, Davies decided he wanted to stay active so in the spring he began working with the Lion quarterbacks, including his sophomore son. Now he has joined Lou Vircillo’s staff and from watching last night it’s pretty obvious he’s in charge of the passing attack. So Thursday Davies will actually coach against Howell in the pre-game 7-on-7. Then he’ll get to sit back and watch is older son Ryan who set numerous records at Howell and will be the Monmouth County quarterback.

There were a lot of impressive players in last night’s tournament…among them Southern Regional receiver Mike Gesicki and Barnegat sophomore quarterback Cinjun Erskine who will have to sit out 30 days after transferring from Holy Spirit.
