Group Semifinals

Group IV

At Memorial Athletic Complex, Summerfield Elementary School, Neptune

Washington Twp. 2, Manalapan 1 (OT)

Senior All-American Derek MacKinnon scored the second of his two goals 36 seconds into the second overtime and the Minutemen thwarted a stern challenge from the Braves to advance the Group IV final Sunday against Scotch Plains-Fanwood at Kean University, their first trip to a Group final in program history.

Manalapan tied the game in the 75th minute on a shot by senior Jordan Vance from just inside the top of the 18-yard box. Washington attempted to clear a free kick by Braves senior Ryan Hammer, but the ball bounced right to Vance, who lofted a shot to the right side netting to stun the Minutemen.

Braves senior goalkeeper Justin Terr made his second of two crucial saves in the 77th, when he parried a shot by MacKinnon from six yards away up over the crossbar. Terr also saved a shot by Seton Hall recruit Burak Odzemir to the upper near corner of the frame in the 52nd minute.

Washington won the game within the first minute of the second overtime session on a give-and-go between MacKinnon and Dan Marino. MacKinnon chipped the ball in the air to Marino, who one-timed the ball through to MacKinnon. The St. Joseph's recruit drew Terr off of his line and slipped the winning goal to the right side netting to set of Washington's celebration.

MacKinnon scored his first goal of the match by one-timing a pass from Lou Vilotti out of the air and into the net in the ninth minute.
