Every week this season, Shore Conference football fans will have their chance to vote for the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey/Shore Sports Network Football Player of the Week on our website.

The Week 7 Player of the Week winner is Marlboro senior running back/defensive back Dontrell Alston, who ran for a career-high 202 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries and also had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown to lead the Mustangs to a 26-14 upset win over district rival Freehold Township.

Alston’s 35-yard pick-six in the second quarter tied the game at seven and was the first of three consecutive Marlboro touchdowns that gave the Mustangs a 19-7 halftime lead. Freehold Township closed the gap to 19-14 in the third quarter but Alston and Marlboro responded with a 49-yard touchdown to put the game away. Alston also had a 4-yard touchdown run as Marlboro defeated Freehold Township for the first time since 2012.

Alston’s 202-yard effort was his third 100-yard rushing game this season. He now has 770 yards rushing and six touchdowns on the year. Marlboro (2-5) will look to close the regular season with a victory when it hosts winless Matawan on Friday at 3 p.m.

Alston won the fan poll comfortably with 25.57 percent of the votes to beat out Raritan’s Steve Coponi, Brick’s Anthony Prato and Freehold’s Sha’Kim Shuler.
