ELIZABETH MINUTEMEN TOURNAMENT

Ben Sabo (113), Billy Borowsky (195) and Anthony Bonavito (Hwt) each won individual titles to lead Point Boro to the team championship, its third tournament title this season.

 

DAN TRAINER COLLINGSWOOD DUALS

CBA senior Rich Koehler won by fall over Jason Bilderback in 1:36 at 120 pounds to record his 100th career win. Koehler is the eighth wrestler in program to reach 100 wins.

Sophomore Max Bean scored an 8-6 decision over Region 7 qualifier Zack Miller at 113 pounds and Rich Koeher won by fall at 120 pounds for his 101st career win to highlight the match for the Colts.

 

TIMBER CREEK DUALS

La'Qym Morris (195) and Kevin Cerruti (Hwt) each won by fall while Ryan Carey (138) and Luke Arnold (160) won by technical fall to power the Green Wave past the Wolverines.

The Green Wave won the first seven bouts and 12 of 14 bouts overall, receiving pins by Dylan Kelleher (106), Ryan Zimmerman (113), Stivini Silva (132), Isaac Shohet (145), Edgar Padilla (170), Dan Santos-Silva (182) and Tracey Taylor (220) to rock the Indians. Rey Guzman (120) and Luke Arnold (160) each won by technical fall.

Junior heavyweight Kevin Cerruti suffered his first loss of the season when he was defeated by Jared Davenport, 2-1, in sudden victory. Cerruti was a state qualifier last season while Davenport was a Region 7 qualifier in 2016.

The Green Wave won the final seven bouts of the dual and received pins from Chris Dean (126), Stivini Silva (132) and Tracey Taylor (Hwt) to defeat the Chargers.

Sophomore standout Ryan Zimmerman was defeated by Nicholas Digiacomo, 6-3, at 113 pounds in a battle of state qualifiers.

 

NONCONFERENCE

After falling behind 12-4 through three bouts the Rebels won 10 of the final 11 matchups, including five by fall and four by major decision, to rock the Cougars in a matchup of teams ranked in the state top 20.

Howell sophomore Shane Reitsma, who reached the fourth round of wrestlebacks in last season's state tournament, won by 20-11 major decision over Kittatinny state qualifier Zach Mafar at 182 pounds to remain undefeated and start Howell's run to a blowout victory. Freshman Paul Jakub won by 17-8 major decision over Region 1 qualifier Calvin Brook at 152 pounds to also remain unbeaten.

Christian Murphy (195), Jacob Wurtz (Hwt), Jesse Liptzin (106), Ethan Liptzin (113) and Darby Diedrich (126) each won by fall while Jerry Lleshi (120), Luke Rada (132) and Kyle Slendorn (138) joined Jakub and Reitsma with major-decision victories. Murphy's pin of Jackson Crawn in 1:35 gave Howell a 14-11 lead (Kittatinny had a point deducted after 182 for a bench misconduct) and Wurtz's fall over Mike Lacken gave Howell a 20-14 it would not relinquish.

Senior Dan Esposito closed out the dual with a 2-1 win in ultimate tiebreaker over Perry Maio.

BARNEGAT QUAD

Vincent Storino handed Charlie Cotton his first loss of the season with a 5-4 decision at 182 pounds to highlight the Garnet Gulls' victory over the Bengals.

A 5-3 win by Santino Giampa at 220 pounds gave the Garnet Gulls a 36-20 lead with two bouts left, clinching the win as they took eight of 14 bouts from the Raiders. Jesse Bowers (132), Anthony Luongo (145) and Vincent Storino (182) each won by fall to lead Point Beach.

Toms River East freshman Michael Conklin won by fall in 38 seconds at 120 pounds to run his record to 10-2 and senior heavyweight Brandon Austin won by fall in 56 seconds to improve to 9-2.

 

BRICK QUAD

The Patriots won the first three and six of the final seven bouts to defeat the Dragons. Justin Schifter (106) and Kyler Hillermeier (182) each won by fall with Hillermeier recording a pin in just 23 seconds. Hector Santiago (113) and Mike Cenname (152) each won by technical fall and Eric Quartey won by major decision at 195 pounds.

Jonathan Mora (132) and Rich Cosgrove (138) won by fall and Frank Savannah (126) won by technical fall for Brick.

Jonathan Mora won by fall over Region 7 sixth-place finisher Mike Martinak at 132 pounds to spearhead the Dragons' victory over the Hawks. Mora needed just 25 seconds to pin Martinak and give Brick a 19-0 lead. His victory was part of a five-bout winning streak to begin the match.

Frank Savannah also won by fall with a first-period pin at 126 pounds while Joe Ferigne (120) and Nick Malta (182) each won by major decision.

The Patriots won the final seven bouts and 10 bouts overall to erase a 21-15 deficit and defeat the Hawks in convincing fashion. Alex Salkin (120), Mike Cenname (152), Kyle Hillermeier (170), Jarrid Markowitz (195) and Hector Santiago (113) each won by fall to lead the way.

 

EWING QUAD

Scott Dupont won a battle of state qualifiers when he defeated Lavinsky Collins, 6-3, at 160 pounds and Matteo Pinnero won by fall at 120 pounds to clinch the Hornets' win over the Blue Devils. Dupont reached the third round of wrestlebacks while Collins reached the second round of wrestlebacks at last season's state tournament. Pinnero's pin over Aaron Zaggi in 3:49 gave Holmdel a 38-28 lead with one bout remaining.

Tom Ammirati (132), Zack Wolf (138), Johnny O'Beirne (170) and Nick Ammirati (106) also won by fall for Holmdel while Tom Gao (145) won by technical fall to give Holmdel the edge in a match where the teams split the bouts, 7-7.

Dean Gallo (145), Chris Bell (152), Scott Dupont (160), Michael Pavlinetz (195) and Jake Leroux (220) each won by fall to lead the Hornets past the Rams.

 

JACKSON LIBERTY QUAD

Dyon Womack won by 3-1 decision in double overtime over Paul Santomarco at 126 pounds in a matchup of Region 6 place-winners and Kenny Koenig defeated Matt Benedetti, 7-5, at 170 pounds in a meeting between Region 6 qualifiers to help the Cougars knock off the Braves in a Class A North showdown.

Aaron Royle (195) and Jovani Valezquez-Ruiz (Hwt) each won by fall as Colts Neck won nine of 14 bouts.

Peter Benedetti (220) and Andrew Keller (160) each won by fall for Manalapan.

Dyon Womack defeated Jackson Liberty state qualifier Josh Bollard, 2-1, at 126 pounds to highlight a Cougars win where they won 10 of 14 bouts against the Lions in a nondivisional match.

Thomas Lidondici (220), Joey King (120), Joseph Barsky (152), Kenny Koenig (170) and Michael Monetti (182) each won by fall for Colts Neck.

Jonathan Recio won by fall at 138 pounds to lead Jackson Liberty.

Michael Jannucci (182), Logan Waller (106) and Dyon Womack (126) each won by fall to lead the Cougars past the Colonials in a Class A North matchup.

Nico Messina won by fall at 113 pounds to lead Freehold.

Peter Benedetti (220), Alex Baran (138), Anthony Coposky (145), Andrew Keller (152) and Matt Benedetti (16-) each won by fall while A.J. Sortino (120) and Kareem Ghiada (132) each won by technical fall to power the Braves past the Lions in a nondivisional match.

Josh Bollard defeated Paul Santomarco, 3-2 in double overtime at 126 pounds, to lead Jackson Liberty. Bollard was a state qualifier at 113 pounds last season while Santomarco was fifth at 106 pounds in Region 6.

Chavis Coleman (195), Dorian Hall (113), Josh Bollard (126), Jonathon Recio (138) and Tristain Terranova (182) won by fall to steer the Lions to a win over the Colonials in a nondivisional matchup.

Nico Messina (120) and Tony Dushku (132) each won by fall for Freehold.

 

KEANSBURG QUAD

Liam Riecks (195), Jesse Berescky (120) and Isaiah Stanton (145) won by fall to lead the Titans past the Blue Bishops in a Class B Central matchup.

Jaylen Paige remained undefeated with a pin at heavyweight for Asbury Park.

Isaiah Stanton won by fall at 145 pounds to lead the Titans to the Class B Central victory, while Jaleel Gopaul (126) and Michael McCahon (182) each won by fall for the Red Raiders.

Elijah Moore (170), Yaseen Zaky (182), Traevon Stevens (Hwt), Kobi Ferrer (113) and Isaiah Stanton (145) each won by fall to lead the Titans to a win over the Purple Roses in Class B Central.

Michael McCahon (195), Jaleel Gopaul (126) and Salvatore Tornetto (145) won by fall to give the Red Raiders the win over the Blue Bishops in a Class B Central match.

Michael McCahon (182), Salvatore Tornetto (145) and Shane Zimmerman (170) had pins for the Red Raiders in their B Central win over the Purple Roses.

 

MOUNT OLIVE QUAD

No. 3 Southern 45, Mount Olive 14

Jayson Scerbo, a Region 8 qualifier at 106 last season, defeated Region 2 fifth-place finisher Thomas Casey, 2-1, at 113 pounds to highlight the Rams' victory over the Spartans. Jason Sari (132), Robert Woodcock (138), Vin Miele (182), J.T. Cornelius (220), Matt Mackanic (Hwt) and Matt Brielmeir (106) each won by fall to power the win.

The Rams welcomed back two of their top wrestlers as senior Matt Barnett, a two-time state qualifier, made his season debut with a pin at 138 pounds and junior Nick O'Connell, the state eighth-place finisher at 145 pounds last season, recorded a major decision in his first action since Dec. 23 to lead Southern over the Highlanders.

Sebastian Delligatti won by fall over Eli Shephard at 126 pounds in a matchup of region qualifiers while Nick Pepe (138) and Matt Mackanic (220) also won by fall for Southern.

 

OCEAN QUAD

The Lions won the final six bouts, including four by fall, to erase a 23-11 deficit and defeat the Spartans in a Class B North match between ranked teams. Following a forfeit to Stanley Wojdylak at 160, freshman Nico Cerbo won by 4-3 decision over Anthony Esposito to make it 23-20. Kevin McCarthney, Nicko Cofone, Jacob Anderson and Austin Dewise then closed out the dual with consecutive pins to clinch the win for Middletown North.

Region 6 qualifier Adam Manzo defeated state qualifier Fred Luchs, 6-4, at 120 pounds to lead Ocean.

Tyler Klinksy (113) and Austin Dewise (Hwt) won by fall and Fred Luchs (120), Nate Pujols (126) and Nicko Cofone (195) each won by major decision as the Lions won nine bouts to defeat the Gaels. Middletown North trailed 26-20 with four bouts left before wins by Cofone, Jacob Anderson, Dewise and Thomas O'Keefe (106) clinched the win.

Junior Jacob Anderson pinned Region 5 qualifier Ben Markulec in 3:09 at 195 pounds to lead the Lions past the Bulldogs. Fred Luchs (126), Nate Pujols (132), Austin Dewise (Hwt) and Tyler Klinksy (113) also won by fall while Stanley Wojdylak won by technical fall at 152 pounds.

Will Tisony (113), Adam Manzo (126), Jack Nies (132), Jake Benner (152), Joe Teresi (Hwt) and Demetri Poniros (106) each won by fall as the Spartans used bonus points to get past the Bulldogs.

The Spartans trailed 24-21 with two bouts left before Demitri Poniros and Will Tisony won by fall at 106 and 113 pounds to give Ocean the comeback win over the Gaels. Jack Nies (126) won by technical fall and Alex Poniros (132) won by major decision.

 

OLD BRIDGE QUAD

Josiah Walker (195), Steven Giannios (220), Joseph Butler (106), Tyler Pep (120), Charles Peterson (145) and Blake Clayton (152) all won by fall while Nick Caracappa (182) and Dean Peterson (113) recorded technical falls to lead the Lancers to a win over the Bombers.

Tyler Pepe defeated Jake Wiatroski, 3-1, at 120 pounds in a battle between state qualifiers and Charles Peterson won by 14-0 major decision over Region 5 qualifier Alec Meyers at 138 pounds to lead the Lancers past the Knights. Steven Giannios (220), Paul Liseno (285) and Josiah Walker (195) each won by fall and Blake Clayton won by major decision at 152 pounds.

Freshman Dean Peterson defeated Region 5 qualifier Brandon Spellman, 6-4, at 113 pounds and senior Charles Peterson beat Region 5 6th-place finisher Aidan Dillon, 7-0, as the Lancers topped the Big Blue. Josiah Walker (195), Steven Giannios (220), Seth Rotondella (126) and Jaden Lowe (182) each won by fall for St. John Vianney.

 

PINELANDS QUAD

Jacob Maroukis (120), Shane Harrigfeld (152), Dominick Nocero (182), Thomas Smith (195) and Luke Barlet (Hwt) each won by fall as the Griffins won nine bouts to defeat the Golden Eagles in a Class B South match.

Joe Zaccaro (132), Nicholas Sura (145) and Marc Palmieri (170) won by fall for Central.

The Wildcats earned six points in all seven of their victories to edge the Golden Eagles as Travis Brown (126), Brennan Richardson (152), Jacob Mena (160), Chris Milano (182), John Morrin (195) and Damien Price  (106) won by fall and Avery Maski received a forfeit at 220 pounds. Pinelands trailed 39-36 heading into the final bout at 106 where Price scored a pin in 58 seconds to clinch the match.

Nick Rivera (113), Joe Zaccaro (132), Curtis Lively (138), Nicholas Sura (145) and Kyzion Collins (Hwt) won by fall for Central.

A pin by Chris Milano at 182 pounds gave the Wildcats a 40-18 lead with three bouts left and clinched a win over the Griffins. Pinelands won by fall in six of its seven wins as Hayden Jeannotte (106), Travis Brown (126), Sam Cardillo (132), Dylan Imbrenda (145) and Brennan Richardson (152) also scored pins to fuel the victory.

Cael Rankin (120), Conor Panzarella (160) and Thomas Smith (195) each won by fall for Donovan Catholic.

 

SHORE REGIONAL QUAD

Gabe Pesh (138), Taylor Sousa (195), Mike Rosati (220), Brad Smuro (120) and Al Desantis (126) each won by fall as the Blue Devils won nine of 14 bouts to defeat the Mountaineers.

Al Desantos (132), Jarrett Weir (145), Mike Rosati (220), Jake Maida (106), Matt Klemser (120) and Brad Smuro (126) won by fall to lead the Blue Devils past the Panthers.

 

SPOTSWOOD QUAD

Justin Weimer (170), Jack Hardzewicz (182), Adam Markman (Hwt) and Stephen McGrouther (106) won by fall to lead the Eagles to a win over the Rams.

A.J. Vega (132), Danny Ward (145), Blak Zarzycki (152), Justin Weimer (170), Brady Smith (220), and Adam Markman (Hwt) each recorded pins to spearhead the Eagles in their win over the Chargers.

The Eagles won the first 11 bouts with pins by Adam Markman (Hwt), Stephen McGrouther (106) and Michael Holland (113) to defeat the Little Tigers. Princeton forfeited seven weight classes.

 

WAYNE VALLEY QUAD

The Rockets won just six of the 14 bouts, but four straight pins by Anthony Aquilano, George Burdick, Justin Acevedo and Ethan Wolf from 170 to 220 pounds, followed by a 2-1 decision from Matt Spirko at heavyweight enabled the Rockets to edge the Lions.

At 132 pounds, senior Russell Benson won by major decision over Kyle Anderson.

Raritan led 31-27 heading into the final bout and held on for the victory when Robert Taddeo held Frank Diesso to an 8-5 decision at 113 pounds. A major decision by Diesso would have tied the match at 31 and North Hunterdon would have won on criteria due to having won more bouts.

Ethan Wolf defeated Nick Trani, 3-1, in sudden victory overtime at 220 pounds to highlight the Rockets blowout victory over the Indians. Trani was a state qualifier who reached the third round of wrestlebacks at last season's state tournament while Wolf was fifth in the Region 5 Tournament.

Justin Acevedo won by fall over Gabriel Ortiz at 195 pounds in a matchup of region qualifiers while Robert Taddeo (113), Russell Benson (132), Anthony Aquilano, George Burdick (182) and Jacob Spirko (Hwt) also won by fall for Raritan.

George Burdick, the fifth-place finisher in the Region 5 Tournament last season, won by fall over Region 4 qualifier Peter Kenny at 182 pounds as the Rockets won 11 of 14 bouts to put away the Knights. Robert Taddeo (113), Mike Lonnay (120), Russell Benson (132), Anthony Aquilano (170), Justin Acevedo (195) and Matt Spirko (Hwt) also won by fall for Raritan.

 

BRICK MEMORIAL TRI

A 30-second pin by Caleb Alavardo at 138 pounds gave Brick Memorial a 32-22 lead with two bouts left and Brian Alexander held state qualifier Matthew Potash to a 6-0 decision at 145 pounds to clinch the win as the Mustangs held on to clip the Scotties.

The Mustangs won just six of the 14 bouts, but pins by freshmen David Szuba (160) and Vin Santaniello (106), a fall by Ron Hopping at 182 and a technical fall by Sam Williams at 195 enabled Brick Memorial to out-bonus Bordentown.

Caleb Alvarado defeated two-time region qualifier Brent Grocott, 7-5, at 138 pounds while Chris Mitler (Hwt) and Michael Richardson (126) won by fall to lead the Mustangs past the Ravens.

 

BRIDGEWATER-RARITAN TRI

Nick Reilly (126), Nick Boggiano (145), Matt Spalleteta (152), Sal Antinozzi (160), Juan Nakano (170), Michael Nakano (182), Anthony Clavijo (195) and John O'Donnell (220) won by fall as the Mariners won 11 of 14 bouts to overwhelm the Panthers.

Nick Reilly won by fall over Hunter Rinehart at 126 pounds in a matchup of region qualifiers and the Mariners took nine bouts to defeat the Vikings. Trailing 12-0 after the first two weights, Toms River North then won the next eight bouts to take a 41-12 lead. Nick Boggiano (152) and Michael Nakano (182) won by fall during that stretch.

 

FAIR LAWN TRI

Sophomore Kyle Epperly won by 8-6 decision over Joe Covino at 182 pounds in a matchup of region qualifiers to highlight the match for the Jaguars.

 

MANASQUAN TRI

Charles Barreda (160), Luke  Hessinger (182), Alan Juarez (220), Jackson Jannarone (120) and Ethan Dzenis (138) each won by fall to lead the Warriors past the Falcons in a nondivisional match.

Jake Hollander (170), Ricky Voss (Hwt), Devon Pham (113), Kevin Cartagena-Walsh (126) and Dylan Pham (145) won by fall for Monmouth.

Charles Barreda (160), Luke Hessinger (182) and Shane Ownes (195) won by fall to pace the Warriors in their nondivisional win over the Huskies.

Alwayne Mitchell (152), Lee Rubin (106), Kamrin O'Neill (113) and Daniel Higuita (126) won by fall for Matawan.

Matawan 34, Monmouth 34 - Matawan wins on criteria H: first points scored

A pin by Monmouth's Kevin Cartagena-Walsh in the final bout tied the score at 34 and sent it to criteria, but Matawan prevailed on the eighth tiebreaker via having scored the greater number (total match points) of first points scored.
