Congratulations to Hope Beyer, a senior at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science which is part of the Ocean County Vocational Technical School District.

Hope was randomly selected from the 38 seniors honored this school year as WOBM/Gateway Toyota Students of the Week to receive a $1000 college scholarship.  Secretary of the Champion Schools Safe Driving Program she is also a member of the MATES Executive Student Council and National Honor Society.

A high honor roll student she was also captain of the Brick Memorial Track and Cross Country teams.  Hope will be attending Bucknell University in the fall and plans to major in the field of math and science.  Randomly selected by Gateway Toyota General Manager Rick Cardwell she will receive $500 each from WOBM and the Toms River auto dealership.

Former football players from Central Regional High School and Lacey Township High School will roll back the clock tomorrow when they meet in an alumni football game at Central’s Joseph J. Boyd Memorial Field at 7pm.  Organized through OT Football which has run several of these games in the shore area, the former Golden Eagle and Lion players have been practicing for months to get ready for the full contact game.

The two schools played one another for many years after Lacey opened its doors in 1981 but their rivalry is now on hold because they are in different divisions.  Central will have a few old-timers including 61-year old Rick Pullen, 1976 graduate and Tuckerton Police Chief Mike Caputo and current superintendent Dr. Tommy Parlapanides.  Meanwhile the oldest Lacey player to suit up will be 1989 graduate James Tweed.

The teams will not only be playing for pride but the Mayor’s Trophy which will be presented by Berkeley Township Mayor and Central grad Carmen Amato and Lacey Mayor and school alumnus Steven Kennis.  The two also have a friendly side wager with the loser to pay for dinner.

As a 1973 Central grad and former bad football player I was not solicited to play in the game or deliver what would have been an inspirational pre-game speech.  Therefore I’m attending a family birthday party in Pennsylvania.  Be safe boys!
