Former Freehold Township and Monmouth University star Brad Brach had a memorable night for the Orioles on Thursday, and his old coach was at Camden Yards eating up every second of it.

Brach, a reliever for the Orioles, struck out Angels All-Star Mike Trout and then outfielder Josh Hamilton to end the eighth inning of a scoreless game in an eventual 1-0 loss to Anaheim in 13 innings. After the strikeout of Hamilton that drew a roar from the crowd, the television cameras captured Freehold Township head baseball coach Todd Smith, who coached Brach as an assistant, pumping his fist wildly and cheering alongside longtime Patriots boys basketball coach Brian Golub.

Smith then did a joint interview with Brach on Friday with local affiliate MASN about coaching Brach, who pitched two scoreless innings of relief on Thursday.

The two coaches made the trip down to Baltimore to support Brach, who beat the odds as a 42nd-round pick in 2008 out of Monmouth to reach the big leagues with the Padres in 2011. He was traded to the Orioles in November of last year and started the year with Baltimore before being sent to Triple-A after 10 appearances. He was then recalled to join the Orioles' bullpen on June 21.
