Every week this regular season, Shore Conference football fans will have their chance to vote for the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Jersey/Shore Sports Network Football Player of the Week on our website, with over 130,000 votes cast so far this season.

The winner of the Week 8 readers’ vote for the Shore Sports Network Football Player of the Week is Point Beach senior tight end/defensive back Jean Verrier who had a touchdown reception and an interception return for a touchdown in the Garnet Gulls’ 41-7 win over Highland Park to improve to 5-3.

Verrier caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Luke Frauenheim and later in the game intercepted a pass at his own goal line and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. His pick six is the longest scoring play in the Shore Conference this season.

Point Beach started the season 3-0 but then lost three games in a row to slip to 3-3. The Garnet Gulls have righted the ship over the past two weeks with wins over Shore and Highland Park to put itself in position to secure a playoff spot in Central Jersey Group I. Point Beach faces No. 7 Mater Dei Prep (5-1) on Saturday, but the even with a win the Gulls will not accrue power points because it is their ninth game and only the results from the first eight games count toward playoff seeding.

Verrier pulled ahead of Jackson Liberty’s Nick Johnson and held on for the win with 46.92 percent of the vote. Johnson had a big game in Liberty’s 34-28 win over Pinelands two two touchdown catches and 15 tackles (six for a loss) and a sack on defense.
