NJSIAA Tournament

Sectional semifinals

South Group IV

1-Southern 8, 5-Old Bridge 5

The Rams rallied from a two-goal deficit twice in the second half, eventually scoring the game's final five goals to defeat Old Bridge, 8-5, and reach the sectional final for the second year in a row.

Old Bridge (15-6) made sure 85-goal scorer Dylan Jinks wouldn't burn them, and kept him completely off the scoresheet for the first time all season. The Rams responded with three goals from Chris Smith, two goals and two assists from Shawn McManus and two goals and one assist from Nick Simonelli. After Old Bridge took a 5-3 lead in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, Southern rallied and eventually took the lead when Smith buried a feed from McManus on an extra-man opportunity. Brian Dunphy also scored for Southern (19-2) and Brendan Mullen dished out two assists. Brendan Lefanto made 10 saves and Billy Dowd dominated the face-off circle by winning 13 of 16 draws.

The Rams, who are the defending sectional champions, will host third-seeded Lenape, which defeated South Brunswick 15-2 in the other semifinals, at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Lenape defeated Southern, 8-6, in the first game of the season.

Old Bridge goalie Nick Marzullo was outstanding in net with 14 saves, and Thomas Francy and Alex Palumbo each scored twice for the Knights.

Senior midfielder Chris Hubler led the way with three goals and two assists and sophomore attackman Robbie Garavante netted two goals and added two assists. Dominic Padula and Chris Sutphen also scored twice, and Bryce Metzger made eight saves.

Rumson, which is the defending champion, will host 10th-seeded A.L. Johnson (9-11), which knocked off seventh-seeded Holmdel, second-seeded West Deptford and third-seeded Middle Township in its run to the sectional title game, at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Borden Stadium.
