Former Toms River East player Kyle Sandberg was approved as the Raiders' new head football coach during Wednesday night's Toms River Regional Schools Board of Education meeting.

Sandberg has served as Toms River East's defensive coordinator the past two season.

Sandberg takes over for Charlie Diskin, who resigned following the 2015 season. Diskin coached Toms River East for 10 seasons from 2006 through 2015, compiling a 48-54 record. The Raiders have not had a winning season since going 10-1 in 2009, and have gone a combined 2-18 over the last two years with both wins coming in NJSIAA consolation games.

Sandberg graduated from Toms River East in 2004 and was a starter at defensive back when the Raiders went 9-1 and 9-2, respectively, in 2003 and 2004 under Joe Arminio, who is now the Toms River Regional athletic director. Sandberg went on to play at at Division II Southern Connecticut State University where he was a three-year starter at free safety.
