Next stop for Jason Groome could be Fort Myers, Florida the home of the Boston Red Sox rookie league team.  The 17-year old recent Barnegat High School graduate was in Boston Thursday when word came that he and the Red Sox had agreed on a contract that would pay him a signing bonus of $3.65 million. Not bad for a teenager.

The 6’5 left-handed pitcher was the 12th overall pick in last month’s first-year player draft and had Groome not agreed to a deal by 5 p.m. today would have been headed to a junior college in Florida.  Pending the results of a physical he’s now set to begin his pro career which will hopefully find him on the mound at Fenway Park in a few years.

Only five years younger than Groome, the members of the Holbrook Little League All-Stars begin play in the Section 3 Little League Tournament Saturday.  The District 18 champions are one of five teams competing in the sectional tournament at Michael J. Tighe Park in Freehold with the winner to advance to the state tournament later this month.

Holbrook is joined by Freehold Township, North Howell, Bordentown and Clark and has history on their side.  Ocean County teams have won the Section 3 tournament in each of the last three years which bodes well for the youngsters from Jackson Township.

Donald Trump has postponed today’s press conference to officially name his Vice Presidential running mate because of Thursday’s tragedy in France which will also fuel speculation that maybe he hasn’t made a final decision.

All signs point to Indiana Governor Mike Pence but you can be sure Newt Gingrich and even Chris Christie will make final appeals to Trump that they are better choices.
