Jersey Mikes Team of the Week for Week 2 of the Season is Central Regional

After starting the season 0-3, Central Regional went 3-0 in the WOBM Christmas Classic to win the championship in the Kathy Snyder bracket. Their performance in Week 2 earned them the Jersey Mikes Girls Basketball Team of the Week and they will receive a $150 Gift Card from Jersey Mikes.

 

Entering the tournament as the No. 14 seed, Central faced No. 10 Donovan Catholic in the opening round and was able to hold off a 4th quarter comeback to win 37-32. Central built a 30-17 lead entering the 4th quarter, but Donovan chipped away in the final quarter. The Golden Eagles did all the little things teams need to do to win and had 39 rebounds and 23 steals in the game. Sophomore Emma Christensen, who won tournament Most Valuable Player, finished with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 8 steals in the game and Vita Kelyman scored a team-high 10 points.

 

Central had a similar game against No. 16 Lacey in the semifinal round, building a 30-20 lead entering the 4th quarter. Lacey was able to tie the game and send it to overtime where Central outscored them 3-1. Christensen scored 2 of the teams 3 overtime points to give Central the victory. She set a career-high 22 rebounds in the game and tied her career-high of 8 steals. 

 

In the finals Central outscored No. 15 Toms River South 15-4 in the 3rd quarter to build a 40-23 lead and never looked back. Junior Ava Schmidhauser scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and Christensen scored 9 points and had 8 rebounds.
