Mater Dei Prep has made a big splash with a high-profile football hire, the school announced Wednesday morning in a press release.

The Seraphs have hired Dino Mangiero, the former head coach at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, as its new head coach. Mangiero replaces Shannon Hoadley, who accepted a full-time management position within the school as the Supervisor of Safety and Student Affairs. Hoadley was an assistant for several seasons and the head coach last season, going 3-7.

"Dino Mangiero is a seasoned coach with a proven track record," said Mater Dei Prep athletic director Dennis Tobin. "Dino's passion for character education and the lifelong success of his players sets him apart. I am confident he will bring Mater Dei Prep football to the next level both on the field and in the classroom."

Mangiero, 57, is a graduate of Curtis High School on Staten Island. He then played defensive line at Rutgers University from 1976-1979 and was a third-team Associated Press All-American as a senior. He was inducted into the Rutgers football Hall of Fame in 1992. Mangiero also played six seasons in the National Football League as a defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, retiring after the spending the 1987 season with New England.

He was the head coach at Poly Prep from 1995 to 2001 before leaving to take a job as an assistant at Indiana University. He also coached at Wagner College on Staten Island. He returned as Poly Prep's head coach in 2006 and coached through the 2015 season.

"I am happy and excited to be named the football coach at Mater Dei Prep," Mangiero said in a statement. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to coach at a school with a great academic reputation along with a strong football tradition. I look forward to working with the current football staff to help young men become successful student athletes."

There was never a vacancy at Mater Dei Prep, as the announcement of Hoadley's new position, which will begin July 1, was simultaneous with Mangiero's hire. Central and Keyport remain the last two unfilled head coaching positions in the Shore Conference.
