Toms River South’s B.J. Clagon committed to Rider University on Sunday and now can turn his attention to trying to win a second straight state title.

Clagon claimed the 138 pound title in Atlantic City last year and is the top-ranked wrestler in the state this winter at 145 pounds.

Before that he will try and help the Indians secure a South Jersey Group 3 title where they are the top seed and will need to get past nemesis Timber Creek this week.  A dozen teams hit the mat tonight in the opening round with the top teams all getting first round byes.

As expected the Lakewood boys and Red Bank Catholic girls have earned top seeds in the Shore Conference Basketball Tournament which begins tomorrow night.  The “B South” champion Piners are followed by Point Beach, Manasquan, Colts Neck and Toms River North in the field of 28.  On the Girls side the once-beaten Caseys land the #1 seed ahead of St. John Vianney, Point Boro, Middletown South and Rumson.

Despite being the one undefeated team at the shore Point Beach had to settle for the 7th seed because of their relatively easy schedule.

The tournament begins with first-round games tomorrow night although the top-seeds have byes into the round of 16 on Thursday.

Our Shore Sports Network will begin its live broadcast coverage of the tournament with the Boys Quarterfinals on Sunday at Brookdale.
