Friday, Oct. 2

Class A North

Middletown North 18, No. 7 Manalapan 8

Sophomore running back Connor Welsh ran for a pair of touchdowns and junior linebacker Brock Zenker returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown to as the Lions (3-1, 2-1) snapped Manalapan's 33-game Class A North winning streak.

Middletown North went up 6-0 on the first drive of the game when Welsh scored his first touchdown. On Manalapan's first drive, Wilkerson forced the fumble and Zenker scooped up the loose ball and brought it back for the score. Manalapan closed the gap to 12-6 but Welsh scored his second touchdown of the game to put Middletown North up 18-6. The Lions took a safety late in the game when punting from deep in their own territory.

 

No. 1 Middletown South at Freehold Twp. - postponed to Saturday 10/3, 4 p.m.

 

Class A Central

No. 4 St. John Vianney 13, No. 5 Rumson-FH 6

Senior quarterback Anthony Brown threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Marcque Ellington and senior running back Calvin Beaty scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to lift the Lancers (4-0, 3-0) to a crucial division victory over the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-1).

Junior linebacker Tyler Tedeschi set up Beaty's go-ahead touchdown run by blocking a punt and giving the St. John Vianney offense the ball deep in Rumson territory.

Junior quarterback Mike O'Connor scored on a 3-yard touchdown run for Rumson.

 

Matawan 14, Monmouth 0

Senior running back Makiya Ceasar ran for a pair of touchdowns and the Huskies (1-3, 1-3) picked up their first win of the season by blanking the Falcons (1-3, 1-3). Ceasar also had an interception on defense.

 

Class A South

No. 6 Brick 2, No. 3 Jackson Memorial 0

Brick (4-0, 4-0) recorded a safety in the first five minutes of the first quarter and held on for a huge division win over the Jaguars (3-1, 2-1).

A snap on a punt by Jackson Memorial went out of the end zone, and the Dragons' defense did the rest. They limited Jackson running backs Mike Gawlik and Vinny Lee to 48 yards rushing and have allowed just six points in four games this season, recording three straight shutouts.

Jackson had a field goal blocked and missed another, however the missed field goal came after Jared Calhoun had connected one play earlier, but the play was nullified because of a penalty.

 

Class B North

No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 20, Wall 0

Senior running back Dylan Murphy scored three rushing touchdowns and the Caseys' defense recorded its third shutout of the season in a victory over the Crimson Knights (1-3, 1-3).

Murphy scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter after a 20-yard run on a fake punt by senior Colin Shaughnessy. Murphy returned a kickoff 65 yards in the third quarter to set up his own 1-yard score and added a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Junior defensive back Max Hazard had an interception and senior defensive lineman Charlie Gargiulo had a fumble recovery for Red Bank Catholic (4-0, 3-0).

 

Long Branch 6, Colts Neck 0

Brandon Lane's 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was all the Green Wave (2-2, 1-2) needed in blanking the Cougars (0-4, 0-2) at home.

 

Class B South

Lakewood 20, Jackson Liberty 3

Senior running back Amir Tyler ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Piners (4-0, 4-0) past the Lions (2-2, 2-1).

Tyler scored on a 75-yard run in the first quarter and a 31-yard run in second quarter as Lakewood opened a 14-3 halftime lead. Quarterback Zyhier Jones added a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Braden Yorke kicked a 37-yard field goal for Jackson Liberty.

Lakewood is 4-0 for the first time since 1992.

 

Pinelands at Central - postponed to Saturday 10/3, 3 p.m.

 

Nondivisional

Raritan 34, Freehold 0

Senior running back Derek Ernst ran for close to 200 yards and three touchdowns and the Rockets (3-0) shut down the Colonials for a big nondivisional victory.

Ernst had a 79-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game and also had a 31-yard touchdown in the third quarter plus a short touchdown run in the first half. Junior quarterback Marc Carnivale threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jahciere Jones and junior defensive back Vito Aleo added an interception return for a touchdown.

 

Ocean 26, Manasquan 12

Senior running back Tyler Thompson rolled up 229 yards rushing and a touchdown on 29 carries as the Spartans (3-1) bounced back from a loss with a win over the Warriors (2-2).

Junior quarterback Kenny Pickett ran for 60 yards and two short touchdowns on 10 carries and also threw a touchdown pass to Joey Aldarelli. Thomson had a 29-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

Sophomore running back Connor Morgan had a 73-yard touchdown run and junior running back Jarrett Birch had a 52-yard rushing touchdown for Manasquan.

 

Southern at Howell - postponed to Sunday 10/4, noon

 

Nonconference

Shore 44, Dunellen 7

Senior running backs Doug Goldsmith and Jack Britton each ran for two touchdowns as the Blue Devils (4-0) took care of the Destroyers (0-3).

Britton also had an interception on defense. Alex Johnson added a rushing touchdown and Duke Russo returned a fumble for a touchdown.
