No. 5 CBA 1, Freehold Boro 0

Junior Charile Daly scored his second goal in as many games, a 25th-minute tally that proved to be the difference in a Colts (2-0, 2-0) win over the Colonials (1-1, 1-1). Senior goalkeeper Shane Keenan also picked up his second clean sheet in as many games to open the season.

Colts Neck 1, Neptune 0

Senior Mateo Munoz scored on a set-up by senior Danny Gaines in the 55th minute and the Cougars (1-1, 1-1) edged the Scarlet Fliers to pick up their first win of the season. Gaines split a pair of Neptune defenders before sliding a ball back to Munoz, who hammered in his first career high school goal with a shot to the upper corner of the netting.

Sophomore Rob Manino saved three shots to earn his first career shutout.

No. 3 Freehold Twp. 3, Howell 1

Matt Finocchiaro served up a corner kick to set up the equalizer by Josh Cagan in the 27th minute, then scored the winner on a penalty kick in the 34th to lead the Patriots (1-1, 1-0) to a win over the Rebels (0-2, 0-2).

Finocchiaro also helped cap the scoring in the 60th, when he set up freshman Mike Farrell for his first high school goal - which came on a upper-90 strike from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Howell jumped ahead in the second minute on an own goal.

 

Class A Central

No. 1 Holmdel 5, Red Bank 1

Junior Anthony Arena recorded a hat trick and seniors Mikey Neff and Justin McStay each added a goal to lead the Hornets (2-0, 2-0) past the Bucs (0-2, 0-1) for their second straight win to open the season. Two of Arena's goals came on penalty kicks.

Seniors Cyrus Darvish and Nick Guga each added an assist for Holmdel. Senior Jack McPherson scored the lone Red Bank goal, which cut Holmdel's lead to 3-1.

St. John Vianney 1, Raritan 1

Senior Tommy Savin scored off a feed from junior Jake Fortune in the 63rd minute to pull the Raritan even at 1-1 and the Rockets and Lancers battled to a draw in the opener for both teams.

Senior Nico Clark headed in a corner kick by sophomore Kieran Kane in the 60th minute to stake St. John Vianney to a 1-0 lead.

Matawan 3, Shore 2 (OT)

Sophomore Marcelo Colona buried a free kick for the golden goal in the second overtime period and the Huskies (1-1, 1-1) handed the Blue Devils (0-2, 0-1) their second consecutive 3-2 defeat in double-overtime to open the season. The goal was the second of the game for Colona, the first of which was his first varsity goal.

Senior Bobby Johns scored the other Matawan goal.

Sophomore Sawyer Barth and junior Leo Montesinos each scored for the second straight game, with junior Lucas Bongarzone and junior Taylor Camargos-Souza each adding an assist in the loss.

 

Class A South

Jackson Memorial 2, Brick Memorial 0

Sophomore Dan Russo scored two goals and the Jaguars opened their season with a win over the Mustangs. Junior Joe Schlageter also picked up an assist for Jackson Memorial, while junior Nick Kinzler saved six shots to earn the shutout.

Class B North

No. 4 Ocean 2, No. 6 Long Branch 1 (OT)

Junior Santieno Harding headed in a 40-yard free kick by junior Zach Sintic in the fifth minute of overtime and the Spartans pulled out a golden-goal win over the Green Wave (1-1, 0-1) to open their season and give first-year head coach John Terlecsky his first win at the varsity level.

The goal was the second of the game for Harding, who struck a shot under the Long Branch wall on a 20-yard free kick to open the scoring in the 42nd minute.

Long Branch tied the game in the 66th on a penalty kick by senior Renan Azevedo after senior Juan Carlos Merino drew a foul inside the penalty box. The goal was Azevedo's fourth in the first two games.

Manasquan 1, Monmouth 0

Junior Matt Drake scored on a pass from freshman Tommy Johnson in the 47th minute and the Manasquan defense and junior goalkeeper Steve Speicher made it hold up as the Warriors edged the Falcons (1-1, 0-1) to open their season.

Middletown North 4, Red Bank Catholic 1

Seniors Liam McGregor and Ryan Binn each scored a goal and an assist and the Lions topped the Caseys in the season-opener for each team.

 

Class B Central

Ranney 5, Henry Hudson 0

Junior Ademola Odunlami scored two goals and assisted two others to lead the Panthers to a win over the Admirals in the opener for both teams.

Seniors Jacob Guss, Andrew Denton and Brandon Thomas each added a goal for Ranney, while sophomore keeper Anthony Virone saved two shots to secure his first career shutout.

Asbury Park 5, Keyport 2

Senior Jean Osner Pierre scored a goal in each half and the Blue Bishops (2-0, 1-0) topped the Red Raiders (0-2, 0-1) for their second win in as many games to open the year. Junior Wenderlens Garius scored the other first half goal, senior Shown Narcisse added one in the second half and senior Davensky JoinVilmar scored in the 73rd minute for his fifth goal in two games.

Sophomore Breadian Greene scored in the 43rd to pull Keyport within 3-1 and sophomore Sean Matos scored in the 78th to cap the scoring.

Class B South

Pinelands 6, Lakewood 0

Junior Dom Dos Santos and sophomore Creed Nas scored two goals each and the Wildcats coasted to a win over the Piners in their opener, giving first-year coach Nino Scotto di Carlo his first career win.

Dos Santos also assisted the first goal of the game by classmate Kieran Sundermann in the 11th minute before scoring his first goal in the 20th and finishing off an assist from Sundermann in the 26th. Sunderman also assisted Nass's two goals.

Junior Anthony Diaz also scored a minute into the second half off a feed from freshman John Hart. Sophomore Logan Johnson saved two shots to pick up his first career shutout.

Manchester 3, Barnegat 1

Senior Devin Ortiz, Tyler Laycock and Francesco D'Amato each scored a goal and the Hawks topped the Bengals to open their season with a win. Ortiz opened the scoring in the 20th and Laycock finished off a pass from senior Milan Kleva in the 27th to stake the Hawks to a 2-0 advantage. D'Amato capped the scoring in the 48th.

Senior Ryan Flaherty scored the lone Barnegat goal, which cut the 2-0 deficit in half in the 33rd minute.

Point Boro 1, No. 10 Lacey 0

Senior Leo Schnappauf scored the lone goal of the game on a pass from sophomore Christian D'Amato and the Panthers blanked the Lions to open up their season on the new artificial turf at Point Pleasant Borough High School. Sophomore Steve Redler picked up the shutout in his first varsity game.

Jackson Liberty 3, Donovan Catholic 0

Freshman Sean Yurgel scored the first two goals of his high school career and the Lions rolled to a win over the Griffins.

Sebastian Navarro scored the other Jackson Liberty goal, while seniors Trevor Anderson and Kevin Garry each assisted a goal by Yurgel. Junior Riley Fahnholz earned the shutout in net.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 6

Non-Division

Middletown South 3, Mater Dei Prep 1

Seniors Mike Zito, Andy Segovia and Justin Gould each scored a goal and the Eagles topped the Seraphs in the opener for both teams.
