Gino D'Agostino scored the golden goal in overtime and the Hornets (8-6-1, 7-4-1) edged the Lancers (6-5, 6-5) for their fourth straight win. Rohan Ghandi sent a cross into the box and after taking an initial shot that was deflected by a defending, D'Agostino followed up the blocked attempt by burying the winning goal.

 

Class B Central

Point Beach 2, Asbury Park 0

Cory Gross scored off a punt by goalkeeper Ryan Franzoni and Aris Papoutsakis added a penalty kick as the Garnet Gulls (8-6, 8-5) topped the Blue Bishops (8-8, 8-5) to earn a split of the regular-season series.

 

Non-Division

Brick at Howell - PPD, Oct. 23

No. 1 Shore 5, Rumson-Fair Haven 1

Junior J.T. Kessler scored three goals and handed out an assist to lead the Blue Devils (15-1-1) to a win over the rival Bulldogs (4-10-2) . Lukas Montesinos and Cole Allem also added a goal each and Lucas Bongarzone dished out two assists.

Danny Susser scored the lone Rumson goal in the 25th minute to trim the Shore lead to 2-1, but the Blue Devils responded with three goals to close the firt half, including the second and third goals by Kessler to cap the scoring.

Freehold 4, Monmouth 0

Dom Matteo scored the deciding goal in the seventh minute and assisted another with a corner kick and the Colonials (7-6-4) blanked the Falcons (8-10) to clinch a Shore Conference Tournament berth. Freehold began the season 1-6-1 but has gone 6-0-3 over its last nine games to storm into the SCT. The loss knocks Monmouth out of contention for a spot in the Shore Conference Tournament.

Matteo headed in a corner kick by Andy Rizo from the right flag and later sent in a corner kick from the left flag that senior Joe McMerty headed home for a 3-0 lead in the 36th minute. Junior Matt Schertzer scored the second Freehold goal on a low strike inside the left post from the top of the 18-yard box.

Senior Jon Widman capped the scoring by taking a well-paced through-ball from senior John McGackin and sliding it past Monmouth goalkeeper Matt Vincenti for a 4-0 lead in the 69th.

Anthony Matteo earned the shutout in goal with five saves in his first start in goal. Matteo is normally a starting outside midfielder, but filled in for starter Jesus Lopez, who was unable to attend the game, according to Freehold coach Anthony Sessa.

This week alone, Freehold has tied Middletown North and Manalapan and defeated Freehold Township and Monmouth to qualify for the tournament. The Colonials scored on a penalty kick by Dom Matteo in the 77th minute Friday to tie the game at 2 and earn a draw with Class A North co-champion Manalapan. Matteo scored two goals Friday and has scored in five straight games.
